My favourite live Coltrane LP is "John Coltrane Live at Birdland - featuring Eric Dolphy" which I have as an Affinity LP released in Britain though it would seem to have been a Charly Records issue.  It has Dolphy on three of the four tracks recorded Feb 10th 1962: Mr PC, Miles Mode and My Favourite Things plus a Quartet track from June 2 1960: Body and Soul.  I've never come across it on CD though I would like to.

I suspect some of the material you mention may be on On Stage 1962 (Unknown label) with Eric Dolphy Which I listed in my initial post. Please correct me if this is not the case. This CD should be available from amazon.co.uk Also over the weekend I remembered that I have another live Coltrane compilation. I think I have the version of "Miles Mode" you mention on a compilation live CD I picked up called "John Coltrane - The Legendary Masters - Unissued or Rare - 1962-63" (Rare) however the recording date for "Miles Mode" is listed as the 9th rather than 10th February 1962. Maybe it's from a gig at Birdland the previous night? It's the only tune on the CD with Dolphy on it. The four other tunes are live recordings from Birdland (June '62) Newport ('63) and Europe ('62 & '63).

"On Stage" only has the ten minute "Mr. P.C." from Feb. 10, the other tracks are from a later quartet date (I haven't found out from when exactly, though).

Btw: the Newport is from '63 and has Haynes subbing for Elvin, and it's a great recording, Phil! I wouldn't want to miss it!

Damn - Newport '63 seems to be OOP also. At least I've got the 17'27" version of "My Favorite Things" from Newport '63 on that Rare compilation I mentioned. I guess that will have to do for the time being.

oops - sorry - false alarm - Newport '63 is available from amazon.com if not from amazon.co.uk

Isn't most of the stuff from these questionable Euro releases all collected on the Live Eureopean Tours box? If not, what's missing?

Scott - I don't think the live "A Love Supreme" suite is included.

Thanks for the reference to Amazon UK, Phil. The Live at Birdland 1962 CD is available from Amazon for £7.99 though they would appear to have only one copy left. It has, as I said 4 tracks on it, Mr.PC, Miles Mode and My Favourite Things, all with Dolphy plus a Body and Soul with only the later quartet. I can't find the On Stage 1962 for the moment but I AM interested in finding everything available with Coltrane and Dolphy together on it. As I have said elsewhere here I think Eric had a major positive effect on Coltrane. He seems to have instilled a sort of discipline in him which produces a very tight exciting sound and prevents Coltrane straying into self indulgence. I can't get enough of the combination. Is there a listing somewhere of everything recorded by them so I can separate the wheat from the - eh, not so wheaty?

Thanks Gary - so it appears none of the 1965 "Live in Paris" and only "Mr P.C." from the "Paris Concert" material is included.

'Impressions' (16m) and 'Afro Blue' (10m30s) from the Paris concert at Salle Pleyel were also included in the John Coltrane Live in Antibes 1965 FDC119 CD from the now outlawed France's Concert label.

As I said, "On Stage" only has Mr. P.C. with Dolphy, all other tracks are quartet only. I *think* that Mr. P.C is the same one from February 9 (10 - see Wild's page for explanation about the date). I have no idea where the other tracks come from, but as that "On Stage" disc is a real cheap one (label is "Accord", by the way), I guess it's nothing that isn't on other discs from that period. The date should be later than early '62, but I'm not sure about that.

If someone who's got all that material wants to compare the versions and find out what that "On Stage" disc does included, I could burn it. I'm too lazy to compare, and I have strong feelings that the tracks are included elsewhere (if not on bootlegs, maybe in the 61-63 Trane tree).

The "On Stage" disc is not listed on the Wild page (or I can't seem to find it, at least).

Hi ubu - I'm getting a little confused about this "On Stage 1962 CD which is supposed to feature Eric Dolpy. This is the one I'm refering to:

On Stage 1962

The tracks are:

1. Improvisation

2. The Inch Worm

3. Everytime We Say Goodbye

4. Impressions

This can't be the same one you're refering to as Mr. P.C. isn't on it? I can't find The "Live at Birdland" CD 1ngram is refering to at all.

"Improvisation" is actually Mr. P.C.! Sorry, I forgot about that mistake! And yes, Dolphy is mentioned on the cover, but not on any other track. I remember being very disappointed when I got the disc, and there was no Dolphy on the other tracks! (I found that at a big store on Champs Elysées in Paris, if I remeber right, must be eight years ago or something - I guess Amazon's release date may be wrong, too - the disc looks older! Would have to check that though.)

The box only goes up to 1963. None of the European stuff from 65 is on there.

Also, as far as I know there have been releases on labels such as Charly/Le Jazz with concerts not in the box. (Graz comes to mind, a 2CD set available on that label. Would have to check for more.)

Coltranology (Affinity AFF 14) contains perhaps the most stunning version of MFT. Recorded Koncerthuset, Stockholm, Sweden, 23 November 1961. There are other issues for sure and there may be other tracks from this concert not on my LP.

Posted (edited)

There's four tunes from that concert including MFT included in the box set David. They appear to be also available on the "Live in Stokholm 1961" Le Jazz release. However "Live in Sweden 1961" (Newsound) includes:

1. Impressions

2. Traneing in

3. Blue train

4. Naima

5. Spiritual

6. My favourite things

I suspect that these are the same four recordings with "Traneing in" and "Spiritual" added. Does anyone have any further info on this.

The discography of the Live Trane box is here. Maybe the additional tracks on the Newsound relase are in fact from the 1963 date?

Anyone who has the box and has not seen Wild's corrections to the various errors ought to take a look at this page.

I'd like to put a word in for Live in Seattle. It's late Trane, and probably not to everyone's tastes, but it contains some of the most intense, and, at times, frightening music I've ever heard. I don't listen to it often, but when I do, I always hear things I haven't heard before, and perhaps learn things about myself.

I wouldn't give too much on these Newsound releases! I've got a Miles disc, and it has one track, "Mr. Lucky", listed as being from the fall '60 European tour (with Stitt, Kelly, Chambers, Cobb), but once it starts, there's a baritone sax and no tenor, and you soon suspect that this is the Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams band (no proof, however).

The "Live in Seattle" set is incredible, in my opinion! Love every minute of it (but ought to spin it far more often)! And definitively get the CD, as it has lots of material not on the LP set.
