couw Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 OK, have to admit I did not read the very first post carefully enough. Probably a mention of AMG scared me away never knew it myself before I read that post. Quote

mikeweil Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 When Atlantic reissued two or three tracks from Virgo Vibes on the compilation Daddy Bug & Friends they credited Herbie Hancock properly. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) I just came across the playing of Ayers courtesy of the excellent Jack Wilson release "Something Personal". Ayers is fantastic here. This has spurred me into action as to what might be a good starting point concerning his releases. I would rather concentrate on his jazz oriented dates and you guys have given what appears to be excellent suggestions. What I like about the "Virgo Vibes" dates are the players. Joe Henderson, Harold Land, Herbie, Charles Tolliver, Jack Wilson and Donald Bailey. Sounds good to me. Edited March 22, 2011 by Tom 1960 Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 its nothing special, joe hendersons on it i think, but its one of those atlantic jazz lps w. a good lookin lineup but its just kind of, bleh... Quote
six string Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 this has been released in digipac by Rhyno/Warner in 2002 and paired with Daddy Bug on Collectibles in 1999. Should still be available. It is indeed a pretty good album. I recently bought it on vinyl as a reissue. The label (blue & green)and cover are Atlantic and I don't know how old it is but it was sealed when I bought it. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 The digipac has the bonus material, and frankly -- the 2nd album (Daddy Bug) on the Collectibles edition is not very good. (I had the Collectibles edition, and was quite glad when I upgraded to the digipac.) Quote
mikeweil Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 .... the 2nd album (Daddy Bug) on the Collectibles edition is not very good. I have to announce my disagreement. The pairing is unfortunate, as most who might like jazz in the vein of Virgo Vibes probably won't appreciate Daddy Bug. Totally different albums. Daddy Bug would have been called a classic had it been released on CTI ... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 Well, perhaps I should have said "not as exciting", instead of "not as good". Quote
mikeweil Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 That puts it more accurately. me thinks ... Quote
DMP Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) A couple of years after it's release, Atlantic issued an Ayers LP with many of the "Daddy Bug" tracks minus the over-dubbing. (Think it was called "Daddy Bug & Friends.") Edited March 24, 2011 by DMP Quote
mikeweil Posted March 24, 2011 Report Posted March 24, 2011 Yes, the woodwind and strings overdubs were mixed down, but they had Armen Halburian overdub some new percussion tracks on the title tune. The arrangements - by William Fisher were nice. It's a tasteful album. If they had done the CD reissue right, they would have released Daddy Bug in its originally issued form and added the version wothout overdubs as bonus tracks, including the one unissued track first released on Daddy Bug & Friends. On the CD issue of Virgo Vibes they added the unreleased tracks available and it came out nicely.
