Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 (edited) Just got an email starting as follows: The great tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet has just passed away in New York of heart failure this morning Thursday, July 22 around 2 A.M. Mike Apparently he played this past Friday with his big band at a Lincoln Center Midsummer Nights Swing event. I didn't catch that, but I did see him play that same gig a few years back and it was a great night. Edited July 22, 2004 by Michael Fitzgerald Quote
brownie Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Illinois flew home. Very, very sad news! Quote
jazzbo Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Wow. I'm so glad we had him around so long, wished for longer, but godspeed and we'll miss ya! Quote
BeBop Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 (A moment of science for one of my favorite greats) Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Still playing through all these years, Illinois spread a lot of joy. RIP. Quote
king ubu Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Very sad news Gotta give a spin to the Mosaic soon again! Quote
P.D. Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 I don't believe in the supernatural, but yesterday I loaded up my living room 5CD with the Mosaic and the Verve " Kid and the Brute set. Played it all day. When the 5 discs came to an end, just pushed the start button again.... 10 am 'til 2 am this morning non stop Jacquet................ Now this.... Quote
sidewinder Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 RIP, very sad to hear this. He put on a really excellent show the time I saw him, will most definitely put the Mosaic on later tonight. Quote
vibes Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 I was loading some of my new CD's on my mp3 player, and skipped over the new LPR release of "Desert Winds." At the last minute, I changed my mind and threw it on there. I'm glad I did. I just discovered Illinois Jacquet in the last year with the Mosaic, and I'm glad I did. Queueing "Desert Winds" up now... John L Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 I am going to turn the volume up to 10 tonight for about three or four versions of Flying Home. Then I'll cool down with that special Blue and Sentimental that he cut for Prestige. RIP (Will somebody up there let us keep at least a few giants among us for awhile?) Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Shit, I always loved his sound. I will miss him, but the music will play on. R.I.P. FYI 2 or 3 weeks ago there is a used CD store not from where I live, it had the Jacquet Mosaic, jsut the 4 CD's. $32 plus tax. I have the Mosaic, so I didn't need it. Quote
mmilovan Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 R.I.P. He will always be one of mine favourite sax players. And it is time to spin "Bottoms Up", the album he did for Prestige, and to again listen his "Flying Home" (original with Lionel Hampton). Quote
mikeweil Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Flying Home all his life - finally reached his home. RIP, Illinois! Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Definitely time to pull out the Mosaic again. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 22, 2004 Author Report Posted July 22, 2004 WKCR-FM will be broadcasting 36 straight hours of Illinois Jacquet starting at 6 PM EDT tonight. www.wkcr.org or 89.9 MHz FM in NYC. Mike Quote
marcoliv Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 another sad news....that's enough for a week right? thanks Illinois!! MCO Quote
Uncle Skid Posted July 22, 2004 Report Posted July 22, 2004 Any further confirmation of this? Jazz Veteran Illinois Jacquet Dies Quote
paul secor Posted July 23, 2004 Report Posted July 23, 2004 Another original passes. When the time comes for me to sit down, listen, and honor his memory, I'll probably put on some of his Columbia sides recorded under his own name or with Kenny Burrell, and definitely the version of "Harlem Nocturne" that he recorded for Verve. (I'd try dancing to some of his uptempo early sides, but my wife says that I dance worse than Al Gore, so that's out.) Rest in peace, Mr. Jacquet. And thanks for sharing your music. Quote
