This is a great disc. Thanks for your original post about it, Jim. It gets more and more interesting with each listen. I wish there was more live material out there from this period of Sonny's career.

In NYC this week I am seeing Volume 2 of this.

Anyone heard the second volume?

any more thoughts on the first volume?

I'm biased when it comes to '60s Newk. Loved the 2nd album as well as the 1st. :tup

I picked up Volume 2 of this, because that was what was available.

I have to say that I wanted to like this, because I like Rollins of this period, but the SOUND QUALITY IS SO BAD that it really has interfered with my ability to get to the music. This recording makes A Night at the Village Vanguard sound like an audiophile recording.

so, in sum, while there may be some great playing on this... I can not access it due to poor sound.

I wonder if it was at this particular gig (for sure it was at Ronnies and in the mid-60s) when Rollins opened up his set coming out of the taxi door blasting away on the tenor then walking through the club entrance to the bandstand and into perfect sync. with the band. I've seen a clip on British TV of this very performance but it was many years back. Don't know if that clip still exists.

that story is mentioned in the liner notes as occurring around this time, but it does not say that this incident is on the recording. I suspect not.

but the whole cd, given the sound quality, sounds like he is outside in a taxi to me :D

I'm enjoying Volume 2 very much.....just as much as Volume 1. These are some fine documents and I love the way Sonny plays on these. Can't wait for volume 3.

Just listened to Volume 2 for the first time today and really enjoyed it. I have the first volume but couldn't seem to get past the poor sound quality. Wasn't a problem on volume 2 :) . Will have to give Volume 1 another go tomorrow.

Discovering Stan Tracey has been one of the pleasures of this series for me. Sonny is just on fore, but Stan seems to be able to not only keep up, but on a few occasions (Volumes one and two being particularly memorable) coming out with some left field stuff himself. He seems to be trying to do much more than simple comping.
