Son-of-a-Weizen
Picked this one up about 2 years ago and only recently (few nights back actually) gave it some heavy duty spinning. Wow! Pure toe-tapping fun! This one may only be out on vinyl (Dusty Groove carries it from time to time in the $10 range.) ....nothing terribly adventurous just a slew of upbeat, uplifting tunes (like the latiny 'Richie's Dilema') delivered by a great crew: Hutcherson, Mabern, Billy Mitchell, Al Grey, etc.. J.A.W.
This is indeed a very nice album. I wish Vanguard would reissue this on CD, along with Dave Burns' self-titled album.
Hank
I wish Vanguard would reissue this on CD, along with Dave Burns' self-titled album. Dusty Groove has this listed in its Upcoming Releases section: Bobby Hutcherson -- Bobby Hutcherson -- The Al Grey & Dave Burns Sessions . . . CD . . . Mid-July, 2004 Looks like it could be one of those European-type boots (Ocium, Definitive, Blue Moon etc.). Some other interesting things there along the same lines. jazzbo
It's a good one. . . so are all those sessions that have Al Grey and Bobby Hutcherson together. Would be nice to see these Vanguards and the other Argos out on cd!
brownie
Loved that vinyl reissue of 'Warmin' Up'. Still looking for the first Dave Burns album. Informatively there is another companion to these sides, the Bill English 'Bill English' LP on Vanguard. I stumbled on an original copy years ago and that's the album that got me more than interested on Dave Burns. Burns and Seldon Powell were the stars of that album! This one needs to be reissued too! jazzbo
Yes, I think it's "Introducing Bill English"---definitely fits right in there with the Burns lps! It would be nice if Vanguard would start reissuing some more jazz cds. . . .
Son-of-a-Weizen
Brownie, I agree with you about Powell on the English LP.....'Heavy Soul' is a sweet one indeed. I also like that little bass solo of Martin Revere's on the first track. They say that he played w/J. Watkins and Rouse.....but poor Martin doesn't seem to rank even a footnote over at AMG. They list a Martin Rivera though. Lon, I snapped a quick photo of the re-issue copy...guess they dropped the 'Introducing' bit on these ones. This and the Burns aren't exactly BN eye catching covers...but I like the b/w & a dab of color simplicity of these ones. The 'Warming Up' title is in red. jazzbo
No I think that is identical to the original title, just plain "Bill English" I guess. Been awhile since I looked at the cover. I actually have this on cdr and I'm not sure I have it stored with a cover. Well really, "Bill English" ---nuff said! I too like the simplicity of these covers. J.A.W.
Hmm, maybe an idea for a Mosaic Select?
jazzbo
I'd be game. . . there's a first time for anything. . . that would be the first Vanguard Mosaic product!
J.A.W.
I e-mailed Mosaic's Scott about it - you never know...

Mid-July, 2004 Looks like it could be one of those European-type boots (Ocium, Definitive, Blue Moon etc.). Some other interesting things there along the same lines. It’s on Lone Hill Jazz. Never Previously released on CD. 3 Albums on 1 CD. This edition contains three complete albums: - Al Grey´s "Night Song" (Argo LP-711) - Al Grey´s "Having A Ball" (Argo LP-718) - Al Grey´s "Sanp Your Fingers" (Argo LP-700) Tracklisting: 1. Blues in the Night 2. Stella by Starlight 3. The Way You Look Tonight 4. Through for the Night 5. Stardust 6. Night and Day 7. Laughing Tonight 8. Nothing But The Night 9. Three-Fourths Blues 10. Stone Crazy Total Time: 79:29 Recorded in Chicago and New York, 1962-63 I can’t see how three 12” LPs can fit on one CD. Maybe it’s only the tracks on which Hutcherson played or something like that. JSngry
I love this Burns side. It's kinda like, to use an unlikely comparison, Booker Ervin's THE IN-BETWEEN in how all the tunes are a perfect reflection of the leader's personality and how there's no strain at all on anybody's part to get the vibe going. One of the most comfortable jazz records I've everr heard! If I could sum this album up in one word, it would be "slippers". Or "Slippers". Michael Fitzgerald
The Lone Hill Jazz CD does not include all the material from Snap Your Fingers - it just came out on Verve CD: Nothing But The Truth Three-Fourths Blues Just Waiting R.B.Q. On Green Dolphin Street Minor On Top African Lady Hi-Fly The last three are live at Birdland. Also missing are two tunes from Having A Ball: Rinky Dinky One Day I'll Show You So if someone is advertising "three complete albums" that's a lie. Only Night Song is actually complete. Swinging Swede
Thanks, Michael. The coloured text is from the Fresh Sound site. The Disconforme site also says it's three complete albums on one CD (which is impossible of course).
J.A.W.
I just got an e-mail from Mosaic's Scott, and it seems Michael Cuscuna thought that unfortunately there wouldn't be too much of a market for a Dave Burns / Bill English / Al Grey / Billy Mitchell Vanguard sessions Mosaic; Scott told me they'd keep them in mind nonetheless.
