Anyone can tell something on the Kessel/Mitchell, Baker, Braff, and Bop Session?

I discovered that Kessel/Mitchell Sonet session and loved it.

I'm a big fan of Braff. This was also a very good date.

The Baker I like, but there's better around.

Haven't heard the Bop session in years. Wasn't very impressed with it when it came out.

Someone tell me I need to relisten to it!

Thanks brownie! The Kessel/Mitchell I had some doubts about, but... Kessel has such a nice sound, a rather underrated guitarist, I suppose.

The Braff is with Vic Dickenson, right?

I just ordered the Braff, Hampton/Asmussen and Brookmeyer Sonets. Maybe will get the other three later, but they seem to run out of them right now.

Another question, Guy: the Sonny Stitt you mention in your initial post must be a mistake, yes?

Braff and Dickenson plus some great rhythm section, Dick Katz and Jimmy Rowles, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bill Crow and Connie Kay.

It took me a long time to really appreciate Braff. Love his playing now!

The Brookmeyer and the Hampton are quite good, the Hampton is a very nice piece of music

Uncharacteristically for amazon.de - (really) next day shipping on these ones!

Ordered Baker, Brookmeyer, Cohn/Sims, Farmer and Kessel. Together with some Megadeth remasters.

Giving the Hampton another listen (first time yesterday), and it's a beautiful session! Very relaxed playing by both Hamp and Svend Asmussen. The setting of just violin, vibes, bass (NHOP doing his usual great job) and drums (Thigpen, swinging like mad) is very nice! Swedish pianist Rune Öfwerman sits in on the title track only. A very light sound with some very nice textures, for instance when the violin is "comping" behind a Hamp solo. Somehow there's a Hamp-ness to it, in that it is not just relaxed and laid-back, but has a vitality and drive that is usually to be found in his music, yet still his soloing is so nice flowing, as is Asmussen's.

Gave the Kessel/Mitchell a spin too and liked it, as well as half of the Braff. That one may end up as one of my favourites of the series. But then I still need to give the Carter, the Blakey/Stitt and the Farmer a listen. The ones I miss are the Bebop Session and the Chet Baker. Anymore opinions on the Chet?

I was very pleasantly surprised by the Sonny Stitt with Art Blakey 'In Walked Sonny' album. Had heard a couple of tunes from it years ago when this was practically everyday music fare and forgot to pay real attention.

Now that this era is gone, I found the reissue excellent (with Bill Hardman, Dave Schnitter, Walter Davis Jr).

Sessions like that are to be treasured!

Anymore opinions on the Chet?

I liked it a lot. This is a sparce trumpet-bass-piano session, recorded in what seems to be very relaxed atmosphere in a a library (!). There is a picture from the session - Chet sitting, legs crossed in a huge leather armchair, beer glass beside. This might have stimulated Chet for some pensive, explorative and wise playing. He takes his time, and lets his ideas develop. The (good) bass-piano tream is mainly at the background, putting no pressure on CHet, letting the man think aloud through his trumpet. Chet sings on several tracks, and he is in good (if not top-form) voice. The beginnig of the disc is particularly strong - the second half feels more meandering to me, but still good. There is also a track of recorded conversation of Chet with Red Mitchell, but Ihaven't listened to it yet. Good sound.

Pardon a dumb question ... I would like to replace many of the Sonet LPs I used to own with these new CDs .. so I checked out the Amazon.de site .... there they all are for E7,77!! (Except for the Buddy DeFranco I wanted .. sniff, sniff). My question is ... some are available for E4,99 for "used" CDs .... will these smaller, private sellers mail to the U.S. or is this on an individual basis? Anyone have an opinion? What is the average mailing price of a CD from Germany?

they will ship abroad, although some may be reluctant to do so. BUT amazon charges you with something like 16 (SIXTEEN) euros for the transport to the US, if I remember correctly. The private sellers will also only have to be paid postage for each CD, whether they mail them individually or not, making larger batches less interesting. To send one disk complete with jewel case to the US from Germany will cost 4 eur.

Many Thanks Couw .... Hmmmmmmmm .. this does not make it a very economical prospect if I want to buy 10 or so .... Continental Airlines was running a special airfare to Paris or London for $329 return if I booked before midnight tonight ... that might be a better deal for me..

you can only place an order with a private seller through the amazon system and this automatically charges you 16eur per disk. The 4eur is the actual cost.

At the same time, amazon.de will subtract VAT for non-EU destination - i.e. the price for a Sonet CD will be jnust €6.70. If you want to buy several CDs at once amazon.de probably makes more sense than market sellers.

Happy to report the Ruby Braff is excellent! He's got a lovely tone on his cornet, Dickenson adds his trombone on one of the two dates that make up the CD. Bucky Pizarelli is on guitar and gets quite some solo space, too, which is nice (I never really heard him before). The setting is very loose (as is told in the liners), free playing on some standards, arrangements: none, but rather it seems Braff directed the musicians while playing giving cues etc. All very spontaneous and alive. He and Dickenson certainly are die-hard individualists, of a sort you don't come across very often anymore... the two pianists, Dick Katz on the quintet date without Dickenson, Jimmy Rowles on the Sextet date, add a lot, too, providing a perfect foil for Braff. Bill Crow is on bass, Connie Kay on drums. Recommended!

One strange thing: the personnel listing on the front of the disc omits Rowles, on the back, neither Rowles nor Dickenson are mentioned, instead it looks like a quintet with Katz the only pianist... you gotta read through the rather small-printed discographical parts at the end of the booklet to find out who exactly is playing on which tracks... a bit of a pity, as these discs are otherwise done so nicely!

Also they all sound wonderful, this too applies to the Brookmeyer which I've just put into the player a few minutes ago.

how is the don cherry live in ankara disc which i think is on sonet? i have seen a japanese import disc and wonder if it is worth the investment.

I would not call any Don Cherry Sonets essential. Of the two I like 'Eternal Now' better than the Ankara one.

Those Sonets are mainly for Cherry completists. The various albums with Ed Blackwell (Actuel/byg and ECM) are to get before those two!
