sidewinder Posted July 18, 2004 Report Posted July 18, 2004 This UK vinyl rarity was recorded in 1965 by the late altoist/flautist Harold McNair with Ornette Coleman's (then) rhythm section of David Izenzon and Charles Moffett. Released as 'Affectionate Fink' on Island Records. Anyone heard it and have any opinions as to the music contained there-in? As far as I know, it's never been reissued in any shape or form. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 18, 2004 Report Posted July 18, 2004 Funny, I was just talking about this one with Ben Young and Carlos Kase, who did a great discography of Izenzon - they'd never even seen a copy. I'd love to hear it should there be a chance. Mike Quote
sidewinder Posted July 18, 2004 Author Report Posted July 18, 2004 (edited) I've never seen an actual copy either. This one was posted on ebay recently - apparently lots of surface noise on it and a less than great cover. Still went with a £100 'buy it now' though. There can only be very few copies of this one out there, like you would love to hear it some day ! McNair is certainly an interesting figure in UK jazz. One track of his RCA LP ('The Hipster') was recently put out on the 'Impressed Vol 2' compilation. He was also a key member of Alexis Korner's session band CCS, renowned for their cover of that Led Zep track used by the BBC for all those years as theme to the weekly 'Top of the Pops'. Still ingrained in my subconscious ! Look out for his great work too (along with Ronnie Ross) on John Cameron's soundtrack to the movie 'Kes' and the Deram album released by Cameron, 'Off Centre'. clifford_thornton Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 Wow, that's some rare shit. Never seen/heard of it before... Must Find, Must Find :rsmile: Have you heard that Bob Downes record, "Open Music"? Very nice flute-bass-drums date w/ Barry Guy. I remember it being something I knew I'd listen to a ton... if I could locate a copy. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 19, 2004 Author Report Posted July 19, 2004 Wow, that's some rare shit. Never seen/heard of it before... Must Find, Must Find :rsmile: I have a suspicion that unearthing the Holy Grail would be easier ! I haven't heard a full play of the Downes but occasionally tracks from it have been played on UK radio (I remember hearing one around the mid-70s, sounded excellent). I believe he moved to Germany many years ago, his name is seldom mentioned here in the UK these days. I've got the following list of LPs by Downes from the 60s/70s: 'Dream Journey' (Philips) 'Electric City' (Vertigo) 'Deep Down Heavy' (MFP) 'Diversions' (Openian) The latter has Barry Guy and looks as though it was by the 'Open Music' group. clifford_thornton Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 Openian, right, I was trying to remember the name of the label. 'Diversions' is the other one that my buddy has. Interesting character, and with such short, catchy tracks it's no wonder he got radio play. Kind of like the UK answer to "The Cry" (Simmons-Lasha), that Open Music. Quote
Joe Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 FWIW, McNair sits in on some of the performances collected on this fine release. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 21, 2004 Author Report Posted July 21, 2004 (edited) Here's the (slightly blurred) cover to the 1969 Deram John Cameron 'Off Centre' LP, on which McNair is featured with Cameron's group. Hopefully this will be a candidate for 'Impressed Vol 3'. Looks amazingly like a screen shot from 'The Prisoner' (the TV show not Herbie's LP) :rsmile: Edited July 21, 2004 by sidewinder Quote

Thought I'd revive this 10 year old thread Been listening to the Vocalion CD twofer "Harold McNair" & "Flute & Nut" - didn't realise he was a contemporary of Joe Harriott (both attended the Alpha Boys school/home) It's a pity Island hasn't made much of an effort on their jazz back catalogue i.e. SME's Karyobin (has been on Chronoscope but now OOP), Basil Kirchin's Worlds Within Worlds and of course the above McNair session with Ornette's sidemen Has anyone heard this? This 2006 popsike auction netted £351 (pic of LP included here) ps - just found another copy that sold for £670 in 2009!! http://www.popsike.com/Harold-McNair-Affectionate-Fink-RARE-UK-JAZZ-LP-ISLAND/380174959975.html Edited October 31, 2014 by romualdo Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 31, 2014 Report Posted October 31, 2014 Still on the lookout for a copy. $1000+ is fairly normal for a nice copy of it these days and I know a couple of people who've paid way more! Funny to revisit as I'm now well-acquainted with Mr. Downes' music, which is very fine! Quote
Joe Posted October 31, 2014 Report Posted October 31, 2014 How has this record STILL not been reissued? Quote
