Hardbopjazz Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 (edited) Do you think there would be a chance for this? Edited July 16, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
jazzbo Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 How much material as a leader is there? I know that there is an RCA lp. . . which is out on cd from Europe. (And I don't see too many Mosiac/RCA collaborations these days). . . . Quote
Jim R Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 The only other thing (also a co-leader situation) was RHYTHM WILLIE, with Herb Ellis on Concord. We're talking about one of the quintessential sidemen in jazz, so I don't really think the idea makes sense. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted July 16, 2004 Author Report Posted July 16, 2004 I actually meant Freddie Roach. Quote
Ed S Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 No need for one - I have all of the individual CDs Quote
JSngry Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 Do you know how weird this thread reads coming to it for the first time after the title's been changed? Quote

Tjazz Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 Guess it's kinda like Paul Chambers. 4 albums on Blue Note, now on a 3-CD SELECT. But the Freddie Roach Blue Notes aren't as popular. There's only been one domestic CD release. There could be a SELECT, but it would be a low seller. (my guess, 3000 max) Quote
Big Al Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 Can you figure out whom I had in their first? I'm green with envy that I didn't think of it first! Quote

Tony Pusey Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 Unlike Ed, I am missing a couple of the Blue Notes, so I would buy it. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted July 17, 2004 Author Report Posted July 17, 2004 Unlike Ed, I am missing a couple of the Blue Notes, so I would buy it. Same here. I need two more of his BN stuff. Quote
Shrdlu Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 I think it's a great idea. I like Freddie a lot. The first four of his BN albums, plus, perhaps, some of his recordings with Ike, would make a very satisfying collection of music. It would be even better if they could get Malcolm Addey, or Larry Walsh to do the engineering. Or, and why not, the Japanese guy who did the Mendeses. Quote
marcoliv Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 i would even pre-order a set like this!! MCO Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 This is bound to happen, I just paid $20 for a Liberty era pressing of Mo' Green Please! I've had an early pressing of Brown Sugar for years and Your Move on tape (from back before it was reissued). Would still buy a Mosaic Select, especially if thaey included some unissued stuffs. I dig Freddie Roach almost as much as John Patton (got 'em all, one way or another). Quote
Shawn Posted July 18, 2004 Report Posted July 18, 2004 I would buy it! I think all of Freddie's BN albums were very good. It's always interesting to hear how different his playing is on his own albums, compared to the sound on the Ike Quebec dates. I remember the first time I heard Down To Earth, I couldn't believe it was the same guy. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 18, 2004 Report Posted July 18, 2004 I wouldn't count on this for a few reasons... First off, Freddie Roach historically did not and still does not sell well at all. "Good Move", considered by many to be one of Roach's best, was reissued and Blue Note couldn't give it away. Although I have to wonder how many people were like me and got this from Japan. Secondly, I asked Michael Cuscuna specifically about "Brown Sugar", which seems to me to be one that many are looking for. He said they had no plans for it given the lackluster sales for "Good Move". There's also the fact that it isn't one Roach's best dates and to my ears, Joe Henderson seems bored with the tunes. It doesn't suck, but I wouldn't list it anywhere near my "top 100" list. When I asked Michael why not do a select, he laughed. He said it would not sell. Lastly, I am pretty sure that "Brown Sugar" is on Water Music's "short list" for reissues. I cannot confirm this, but I know there has been some discussion. I have been waiting for someone to verify and until then, it's conjecture. Still, if Blue Note is willing to license this title out, they have no intention of issuing it themselves. Later, Kevin Quote
undergroundagent Posted July 18, 2004 Report Posted July 18, 2004 Don't feel bad...I bought the "Good Move' TOCJ. I personally enjoy Roach's albums, but I agree that a Select probably wouldn't sell. Quote
grey Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 If they do issue a Freddie Roach box I hope they omit "All That's Good" which is real schlock reminiscent of 70s Blue Note junk like Gene Harris 'Tone Tantrums'. Quote
Indestructible! Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 Hi All, Well, I'd be pretty happy if Mosaic issued a Select of my man Freddie Roach (or Frederick, as he's listed on All That's Good... which, as Grey notes, is an album that takes a while to get used, but is worth it!). I've got all of Roach's dates as a leader, and most as a sideman. He was good at what he did... nothing earth-shattering or innovative by any means, but some good grease most of the time! At the very least, I think Down To Earth should be reissued by Blue Note. Some good playing on that one! Cheers, Shane Quote
Big Al Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 FWIW, I e-mail Mosaic about this a few weeks back, hoping for all the Roach BN's, as well as his sideman work for Ike Quebec. They e-mailed back saying that they were seriously considering such a set, but that both Quebec albums wouldn't fit on one disc. Stay tuned..... Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 See, I told you they'd do it now that I finally found a copy of Mo' Greens Please! Man, that is one chicken-fried little record... Quote
andybleaden Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 I hope that they never ever ever release this set ............................................................................................................................. .that is until I finally get off my fatarse and sell my exceptional quality japanese imports at huge prices on ebay Quote
