From Fantasy "News" webpage :

"Due out this fall is an 11-CD box containing the Prestige recordings of tenor saxophonist DEXTER GORDON, about which more later. . ."

After Blue Note, after SteepleChase, now Prestige ? :tup

I want to order this but something tells me 11 cds are a lot. I'll probably get it but something is holding me back and it's not necessaryily the dough.

What about the sound? Are they using the old masterings or are these newly remastered? None of the reviews make reference to this.

Interesting that this 11 CD box set lists for $140 ($12.73 per disc) while the recently issued Miles Davis "Seven Steps" 7 CD box set lists for $130 ($18.57 per disc). I wonder where is the logic, or perhaps the word is "greed" when it comes to Sony Columbia.

Sony/Columbia offers much more elaborate documentation/packaging/etc. and probably deeper research and more "fastidious" remastering. That all costs money.

I've been sent a review copy of this set and will be doing a "formal" review for Bagatellen, at the request of Joe Milazzo. But I can say here and now that this Prestige box offers good value and decent documentation. Not sure that the casual Dexter fan might not be better served, at least in the short-term, by getting individual albums, but that's debateable.

I'm going to plead ignorance here but I'm not familiar with Bagatellen. Does it just cover jazz and (does it cover all kinds of jazz) and how do I subscribe?

Kevin Whitehead reviews his favorite box sets from this year on NPR's Fresh Air. This is one of them, but it's worth listening to the whole thing. It's pretty interesting.

My legal advice to Jim is to not give it away. A very thoughtful, knowledgeable, lucid review-why post here when you can charge us for your posts? I have the box and am glad I do because I will always be a Dexter fan and do not want to pay double for it when it goes OOP. I am not a musician and some of Jim's comments and insights are well beyond me or my ears, but I can vouch for a lot of good music in this box.
