Alexander Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 16 years old. White. British. Sings like a 40 year-old black woman. She's unreal! Check her out! AMG has sound clips. AMG Entry: Joss Stone Quote
Sundog Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I had the same reaction when I first heard her. I'm a sucker for Soul Music and she does have some serious potential. I just hope the powers that be don't try to make her the next Pop Star Diva. Also hope that as she gets a little older and has some life experiences that she starts to write her own material. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Previous thread, I was among the 'nays', still am... Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I wasn't too impressed either, but I've only heard one song (whatever one has a video playing on VH1 or MTV or whatever). She just seemed to sing the same lick at the same place over and over again... no real improvisation like the best soul singers (Aretha, Otis, J.T., etc.) Quote

Still, she's 16! She'll improve! I mean, you've got to admit, this kid has potential out the wazoo. Whether she lives up to it is another matter. She could be the Wynton Marsalis of soul (and I mean that in a bad way). Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I saw her perform a duet on a reallllllyyyyyy bad really bad Motown tv tribute. She did fairly well, reminding me of Janis Joplin, though I had to close my eyes to really be reminded of Janis! Quote
Alexander Posted July 15, 2004 Author Report Posted July 15, 2004 I saw her perform a duet on a reallllllyyyyyy bad really bad Motown tv tribute. She did fairly well, reminding me of Janis Joplin, though I had to close my eyes to really be reminded of Janis! I've heard the Janis Joplin comparison elsewhere, and I have to say that I don't hear it at all on this album. She reminds me more of a cross between Fiona Apple and Dusty Springfield (think of Dusty's phrasing on "Dusty in Memphis" combined with Apple's GREAT BIG voice). Listening to "The Soul Sessions" all the way through, she really seems like more than a one trick pony. All of the tracks on this album BURN. I freely admit that this has at least as much to do with the exceptional instrumental backing and back-up singing as it does with Stone's vocals, but it seems to me that all the soulful production in the world couldn't disguise a serious lack of talent (think of the American Idol alumni). This chick is the real deal, as far as I'm concerned. As for the age question, which has also been brought up elsewhere, I should mention that there is a precident for underage soul singers. Both Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder showed amazing interpretive abilities before they were old enough to shave. Just because there hasn't been a real prodigy since then (hello, Hanson brothers) doesn't mean that there won't be one again. Stone might just be the ONE (why do I feel like Laurence Fishburne in "The Matrix?"). Know what I mean? Quote
Alexander Posted July 15, 2004 Author Report Posted July 15, 2004 Incidentally, Rolling Stone reports that Ms. Stone has an album in the works possibly due out in September. It was already in the works when "The Soul Sessions" was recorded, and features original compositions. So we'll see if she has what it takes soon enough! Is that the sound of a gauntlet being thrown? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I'm not disputing her abilities at all, just noting that when I did hear her there was a definite Joplinesque sound to her, maybe that comes out in live appearances and not on the lp? It was the way she embellished the responses in a "Call and Response" exchange that made me think of Janis, with that sort of "oh ooh whoa" whirl going. Quote

Alexander Posted July 15, 2004 Author Report Posted July 15, 2004 (edited) Most of my post wasn't aimed at you, Lon. Your comment just led to a rant that responded to thing's I've heard and read elsewhere (including the threads that Bright Moments just cited. I know those threads exist, it's just that my thread is "up" and the others aren't). Edited July 15, 2004 by Alexander Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I knew that, was just qualifying my post. Sounding like Janis is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. B. B. King sometimes sounds like Aaron Thibeaux Walker to me. Not a bad thing. Love them both to pieces! But I agree it shouldn't be used just to be dismissive as I think it has been. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 I agree. Her singing is a bit mannered. Still, she's 16! She'll improve! I mean, you've got to admit, this kid has potential out the wazoo. Whether she lives up to it is another matter. She could be the Wynton Marsalis of soul (and I mean that in a bad way). Yes, she may improve, if she keeps working at it. Then again, Otis Redding was 26 when he died. Think about that for a minute. Quote
jack Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 I have heard Joss Stone's Soul Sessions cd and I liked it. Yes, she has some maturing to do but so far IMO she has the voice. I also saw her on the latest MTV of VH1 divas and she did hold her own with the older "divas". Quote
jazzbo Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 As Jim's neighbor might say. . . . Yeah buddy! Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 17, 2004 Report Posted July 17, 2004 OK, I don't think she's as bad as Madeline Peru (sic) and may end up having more of a career, how's that for concilatory? Quote
