Tjazz Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 Saw this at the used store for $32. Does anybody like it? Quote
DrJ Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 (edited) Wow, that's a good price. I've never picked it up. All I can say is that I do like the Origin band he had then, based on studio recordings. I'll be watching this thread with interest to see the comments. Edited July 14, 2004 by DrJ Quote
jazzbo Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I like it, a lot. Didn't expect to like it as much as I do. I'd recommend it, especially at that price (it has never been EXPENSIVE, but that's a good price!) Quote
JohnS Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 If you like the single album "Origin Live At The Blue Note" then you'll probably enjoy the box set which contains an awful lot more of the same. $32 seems a good price. I sold my set on ebay a week or so ago for $40+. Quote
marcoliv Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 i have this one too and it´s very enjoyable. go get it!! MCO Quote
GregK Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I saw this for $19 buy-it-now on ebay a few months ago and didnt buy it. It was new, factory sealed, but I had read some reviews saying it was bad (=boring), so I didnt do it. I liked their release called Change though. Quote
take5 Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 I happen to really dig this set. Origin is actually my favorite of Corea's work as a leader (including Return to Forever) and seeing them at Carnegie Hall was my first major jazz concert. The band really smokes and Corea's playing is a lot more mature than I've ever heard. I highly recommend it. Quote
gdogus Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 I also really, really like this box. Great band, and a great stand at the Blue Note. Lots of repeated tunes across the sets, but always interesting. $32? Get it! Quote
Bluerein Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 What should I add???? It's a great set but you could invest in the single disc Live at the Blue Note just to see if it's for your taste. The upside is if you realy like it you can keep the single disc with the set making it a seven cd set because the takes on this disc aren't in the set. Cheers and you can guess I have it all as well and like it very much (just as Lon I was surprised too how much I did love it in fact). Reinier Quote
Alon Marcus Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 This is one of the best sets I've heard, recorded live. Contains wonderful Corea compositions like Sifu, Molecules, Double Image and Hand Me Down. The love song Soul Mates is probably one of his compositions for sheer beauty of the melody. The set also contains tributes to Bud Powell and Monk two of Chick's main influences. It is also a chance to hear Chick stretching out for long solos on acoustic piano not mentioning the others. The sextet sounds rich. Quote
tranemonk Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 hm.... I have the single CD.... might have to give this another spin...... Quote
Alfred Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 The single disc is enough. There are not many more surprises in the box! I sold mine on eBay but still have the single CD. Quote

I sold mine on eBay but still have the single CD. ← If I remember correctly, the Penguin Guide suggests that the single disc contains the best versions of many of the songs on the box. I have the single disc and like it a lot. Quote
Bluerein Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 I have the box and the single cd (different versions of the same tunes on both) and like them very much. Not quite a recommendation but if you're unsure just buy the single cd used and if you like it you'll like the box too.... Quote
md655321 Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 I also enjoy the music greatly. Its on Emusic so I gave it a listen, not expecting much at all. I think like many others I was pleasantly suprised. Quote
