Hardbopjazz Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 When I ordered the Larry Young set back in 1996 or 97, I ordered it with a friend. His set was a good 300 numbers higher then mine. I don't think there was a rush on the set, but can't fingure out why there was a big gap in the numbering. Here are my numbers. Larry Young- is #2009 Stanley Turrentine is #1418 Donald Byrd is #995 Joe Pass is #1338 JJ Johnson is 4950 Blue Mitchell is #3744 Lou Donaldson is #781 Andrew Hill is #3094 Jackie McLean- Don't know, found it a second hand store. Just the dics. Paid $40. Sonny Stitt and Elvin Jones- Just orded last night, don't know yet. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I thought it had been established that they do not ship sets sequentially, its whatever box gets pulled when they receive the order. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I have a few that are "XX" (they were promotional in nature, they weren't numbered sets). A poster here helped me immensely by pointing out that I could consider those "Number 20"! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I was amused when I noticed my copy of Mosaic Select 6 (John Patton) is Set No. 0006. Quote
JohnS Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 My Brookmeyer select is 0008, my Moncur 0041. Just got the Kenton Presents, that's 3413. Quote
Brad Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I've got too many to be able to figure it out although I do have a reviewer's copy or promotional one that I got through ebay that has the area for the number xxxed, with the the promotional identification. Quote
Leeway Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I thought it had been established that they do not ship sets sequentially, its whatever box gets pulled when they receive the order. That seems like a heckuva system if you're right. You would think the run of boxes to be shipped is in some kind of order, numerical seemingly the most sensible. What point would there be in grabbing boxes from all over stock? Next thing we'll find out is that they write any old number in the booklet just for the helluva it. Wouldn't they HAVE to have the boxes in sequence to ensure the numbering is correct? It seems that when one of the box sets in "Last Chance," reports on the Mosaic thread usually indicate that buyers are, in fact, getting boxes in close numerical order. Quote
wesbed Posted July 14, 2004 Report Posted July 14, 2004 I thought it had been established that they do not ship sets sequentially, its whatever box gets pulled when they receive the order. This may be true. However, I wonder why, if Mosaic doesn't ship in sequence, that when a new set becomes available, and people from this forum pre-order the set, it seems like they always receive low-numbered sets. When I order a set just before it goes OOP, I always receive a high-numbered set. Mosaic may not ship in an EXACT sequence but there is SOME patten of lower-to-higher numbers being followed. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 As someone on the bottom of this game, I might be able to give something that looks like insight. As a "mom and pop" operation, I can control the numbers - the next AE box sold will be #2223. There are a few higher numbers gone since some people ordered their sets based on their address or whatever and I obliged. A company as large as Mosaic probably send around 1000 booklets to the plant and received a packaged product in random order. When they repress, they send numbers 1001- 1300. You takes your chances. Sundog Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Re: Out of Sequence Numbering Maybe Mosaic doesn't want the general public to know exactly how many sets have been sold at any given time? Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted July 16, 2004 Author Report Posted July 16, 2004 and what if two of us had the same set with the same number? Then there must be a mistake somehow. The set number are hand written, so the human error factor does exist. Quote

LAL Posted July 23, 2004 Report Posted July 23, 2004 Mosaic should emboss the numbering of the first and last 25 sets in gold ink so as to make them highly desirable to 'collectors'. Quote
