Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks

Now the Grateful Dead thread has shown that we are all (?) pretty broad minded, so I think I will test the water with this one. What do you think about Dan?

I LOVE him and recently picked uo the cd/dvd of his 60 birthday concert cum celebration. Pretty much great all the way through but to see David Laflamme and the awesome Sid Page sparring together on I Scare Myself...well words,you know, fail me...

Don't know much about Dan Hicks, but I picked up his DVD and enjoyed it.

I had the pleasure of seeing them at The Cellar Door, in early '72 as I recall.

I also saw a quartet which included Maryann Price and Symphony Sid Page on The Gong Show once. They were great!

Great band, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks Striking It Rich is a really fun and eccentric album.

I LOVE Dan Hicks and all of the incarnations of his groups, but especially the Sid Page, Girton, Page, etc. Hot Licks.

After reading about him over the years, when I finally met him after a concert in a small club about five years ago, I was surprised that he was a friendly, nice guy who was willing to take the time to talk for a few minutes with a fan, and willing to autograph a number of albums. Once again, I learned not to believe everything I read.

A close friend on a rare trip to the States in the early 70`s, pre rehab, bought an already inebriated Dan a drink at a club where he was appearing and got them both thrown out!
