Haven't you always wanted to know what went on before the Live/Dead version of "Dark Star?" It's great to hear the opening notes of that "D.S." coming out of the mellow ballad that preceeds it. How haunting and fragile that "Mountains of the Moon" is, and that great transistion from hushed acoustic to electric to roaring mad sonic overdrive. Gotta love it.

Lon,

I'll tell you one thing, I'd much rather hear you sing "Oh, Donna" than Donna sing anything. I love the jazz sensabilities her old man brought to the Dead's table, but Donna Jean is just baggage. I know you like her, but I just can't get there.

Chalupa, that's a great picture of Garcia. Thanks for posting it.

Up over and out.

Donna Jean was kind of the Yoko Ono of the Dead. When she first appeared on stage at the beginning of 1972, I wondered what the hell they were doing. God knows that those banshee wails during the bridge of "Playing in the Band" could clear the house in no time. And that's a shame, since she really does have a nice voice. She just couldn't hear herself; too bad we could. But by the '76-78 tours, she began to fit in a lot better; her duets with Bobby were often sublime. Too bad: '78 is when Keith went to hell.

That's show biz.

Yeah--she is one pretty lady. And did you know that she sang backup for Elvis in has last years? And the Jerry Garcia Band's drummer Ron Tutt drummed for Elvis? Oh my God--Jerry Berry was Elvis! I knew it!!

Meanwhile, Jazzbo, is that Dark Star still crashing?

Hope so!

Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for this board.

I didn't know about Donna singing backup for Elvis, but I sure did know about Ron Tutt touring with Elvis. Great drummer.

I'm working my way through the set. "Dark Star" isn't one of my Dead benchmarks. I'm really enjoying the Pigpen on this set. I usually don't go nuts for Pigpen, but when he's really "on" and the boys feel like playing behind him, magic happens. Magic happens on some of these numbers on this set too because they get the tempoes just spot on.

And I always scratch my head whenever they play "Doin' that Rag." Do they ever play that tune as if they really really really knew it?

She sang backup on "From Elvis in Memphis" and "Elvis Back in Memphis" albums both recorded in 1969. I don't think she ever toured w/ him.

Btw, what's up w/ the new format????

Don't you just love it when Professor Pigpen lectures on proper dating etiquette? Or Reverend Pigpen testifies as to the power of a four day creep? Or when he turns into a jockey so he can jump in the saddle and ride? Oh, yeah, real politcally correct. Just as long as you're not playing pocket pool.

May he rest in peace.

Bad, Bad, bad news.....

The Internet Archive has worked with tapers, tape traders, funders, admins, and over 1000 bands to build a great non-commercial music library that is freely accessible. Technically and policy-wise, it has been invigorating as you can probably appreciate. We have made changes in the past and we will make changes again.

Following the policies of the Grateful Dead and the Dead communities we have provided non-commercial access to thousands of great concerts. Based on discussions with many involved, the Internet Archive has been asked to change how the Grateful Dead concert recordings are being distributed on the Archive site for the time being. The full collection will remain safe in the Archive for preservation purposes.

Here is the plan:

Audience recordings are available in streaming format (m3u).

Soundboard recordings are not available.

Additionally, the Grateful Dead recordings will be separated from the Live Music Archive into its own collection. The metadata and reviews for all shows and recordings will remain available.

We appreciate that this change will be a surprise and upset many of you, but please channel reactions in ways that you genuinely think will be productive. If we keep the bigger picture in mind that there are many experiments going on right now, and experiments working well, we can build on the momentum that tape trading started decades ago.

Working together we can keep non-commercial sharing part of our world.

Thank you for helping find balances that work for all involved.

Wow. I shouldn't be suprised that the Dead pulled the plug.

:(

I guess they were stunned by how quickly the Fillmore set sold out, and were reminded about the huge market they could be tapping. It was great while it lasted.
