street singer Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 Was just browsing the Fantasy site and noticed that 'Live at the Five Spot Vol. 1' is finally slated for a remaster as a 20 bit K2 on July 20. I know a lot of people have been wanting these recordings to be remastered for some time. Maybe the other two volumes will be soon to follow...? This is timeless music. I only wish there were more recordings by this group! Quote
brownie Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 The same Dolphy-Booker Little frontline is also on Dolphy's 'Far Cry' (originally on New Jazz) with a rhythm section of Jaki Byard, Ron Carter, Roy Haynes. Then there was a replica of the Five Spot album 'Eric Dolphy & Booker Little Remembered Live At Sweet Basil' (originally on Paddle Wheel LP). This one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A3nfexqugldke with Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison replacing Little and Dolphy with the original rhythm section (Waldron, Davis, Blackwell), all playing three tunes that were originally recorded at the Five Spot date. Chuck Nessa Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 (edited) What we really need is a "24 bit" condensed package of ALL the 5 Spot material. I would buy that "in a heartbeat". Same story with the Prestige Dolphy in Europe stuff, the McLean/Waldron sessions, etc. Edited June 30, 2004 by Chuck Nessa Quote

Same story with the Prestige Dolphy in Europe stuff, the McLean/Waldron sessions, etc. Agreed. I would love to have a package combining all the Five Spot material...in the proper sequence...possibly even with additional material, if any exists. Does anyone know if there is any additional Five Spot material that has yet to be released? Doubtful, but... Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Actually, Chuck, you are absolutely correct. What the world needs now is a Complete Live at the Five Spot 24 bit package. I, too, would buy that in a heartbeat. I love these discs. Quote
wolff Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 Just wait for the SACD or DVD-A as these recordings(not the music) need all the help they can get. Quote
Claude Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 (edited) I thought Fantasy would now focus on SACD reissues instead of K2 20Bit CDs, as both serve the same audiophile market but SACD is the newer and better technology (although the remastering is generally more important than the format). Quite many albums which have been reissued as K2 CDs have now also been released on SACD. That being said, I've recently bought the K2 CD of Eric Dolphy "Outward bound", and it sounds a lot better than the Complete Prestige box set, although I never thought the box was sounding bad. couw Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 The Prestige box offers all of the material in the "right" order. Like the Europe material it fits nicely on two disks and that would certainly be a nice package. Now it is all "conveniently" spread over 4 albums (?). Luckily somebody already has seen enough light to include the other take of Bee Vamp (originally on the Dash One album) on 5Spot Vol. 1. That still leaves 5Spot Vols 1 & 2, Memorial Album, and Here And There. Or did I miss something? Quote
apaman Posted June 30, 2004 Report Posted June 30, 2004 um great to see fantasy reissuing these in 20bit k2, even though I just ordered the whole set @ five spot from japan jvc mini-lp, I would love to see fantasy do the Mal Waldron-The Quest and George Russell-Ezz-thetics, had to shell out around 30 bucks each for those. Same story with the Prestige Dolphy in Europe stuff, the McLean/Waldron sessions, etc. Very true - to go with the single disc Iron Man seesions from the original tape, and while we are at it the XRCD budget price twofer of Cookin/Relaxin/Workin/Steamin Quote

Also true. I had a similar thought about the the new TOCJ24s. Why on earth don't they do hybrid SACDs? The answer in the case of Toshiba may be a sinister plan to squeeze the audiophiles till the pips squeak. Quote
Claude Posted July 6, 2004 Report Posted July 6, 2004 According to jazzmatazz, the "Wes Montgomery Trio" album will be reissued twice by Fantasy this summer: Wes Montgomery - The Wes Montgomery Trio (Riverside) July 20 — Wes Montgomery (guitar); Melvin Rhyne (organ); Paul Parker (drums): from 1959; 20-bit K2 remastered Wes Montgomery Trio - Wes Montgomery Trio - SACD hybrid (Fantasy/Riverside) Aug 17 Quote
