desertblues
With the new Herman set now listed on Mosaic's site for July release, I'm probably gonna pre-order it - but the discography makes me think it has a bunch of Woody's crappy vocals (a lot more than the previous Herman set). There's a lot of great music here, but oh those vocals! Any opinions?

Pete B
The obvious solution is to learn to love Woody's vocals.....
BruceH
Nevertheless, it's #1 on my "gotta have it" list.
desertblues
OK, OK, Woody's singing must be an acquired taste - I gotta get this one too!
Alfred
They put the alternate takes at the end of every disc. Edited June 28, 2004 by Alfred
brownie
This one does not look like it is going to be sold outside the USA. There is enough new material to warrant a purchase from Mosaic direct! I was hoping for at least an alternate take of 'Four Brothers'. I won't believe it was recorded right the first time around! clandy44
Ah, the missing no. 223. So, there must have been production/technical/licensing issues which resulted in no. 224 (Tal) being released before the Woody. This won't be going to the cold case division. Larry Kart
As fate would have it, some of the tracks with Herman vocals also include superb work from the band and its soloists (e.g. Sonny Berman on "That's What Uncle Remus Said"). king ubu
How would you compare his singing to the vocals he delivers on this one here? I have always had a soft spot for this, and not just for the great sidemen soloing. ubu
JSngry
I'd prefer to get a Phillips set first, but I'm probably in the minority.

brownie
OK Woody Herman was not an outstanding singer but I always had a soft spot for the Columbia album 'Music For Tired Lovers' he recorded in 1954 with Errol Garner and his trio. Too bad it was not recorded in the timespan of the Mosaic Herman sides. Herman's vocalising on this one was really off but the end result was a fun album! jazzbo
I like Woody's singing. I guess I'm weird. . . . I have a real affection for the session with Ruby Braff "It Had to be Us." Man, the singing on there just moves me! Not sure why. . . it just does.
Ed S
Consider me a weirdo too (meaning that I enjoy Herman's vocals as well )
