Dmitry Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 Otis Ray Appleton - drums on Freddie Hubbard's Backlash Ray Appleton - percussion on Coltrane's Cosmic Music I think it's the same man, just want to clarify. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 They are. I got to interview him last year when he played Bear's Place here in Bloomington; cool guy. Only had enough time to talk about his Indpls. experience, but I think our regular jazz DJ got to chat w/him about recording w/Freddie & Coltrane. He also goes by the name Killer Ray Appleton. Quote
kh1958 Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 I saw him at Jazz Standard last fall, leading a Wes Montgomery Tribute band (Gary Bartz, Larry Willis, Peter Bernstein). Quote
sheldonm Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 Ghost is right, Ray is a great guy. I saw him last week and chatted with him a bit. He always seem to be working through some health issues. He was out of action for a bit a month ago, as the doctors found something that appeard to be a growth in his (I think he told me it was his neck) but it turned out to be ok. I've had several conversations with him about his days with Wes Montgomery, Freddie and Coltrane. Some gigs, he talks more than plays, but it great to hear some of the stories.....he hates rap/hiphop!!! Mark Quote
mikeweil Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 (edited) He had some nice records out in recent years, among them a Melvin Rhyne organ trio on Savant. Here's his website - although I have problems viewing anything. I can't even get a source code ... Edited June 29, 2004 by mikeweil Quote
