ghost of miles Posted July 2, 2004 Report Posted July 2, 2004 The Blue Note recordings WERE out on cd but seem to be out of print now; they were part of the 10" series of Connoisseurs. Weren't they grouped with one of the McGhee Connoisseurs? Quote

Matthew Posted July 2, 2004 Report Posted July 2, 2004 (edited) The Blue Note recordings WERE out on cd but seem to be out of print now; they were part of the 10" series of Connoisseurs. Weren't they grouped with one of the McGhee Connoisseurs? yes BN 95748 You guys are correct. Looking more closely at the liners it says, "Two never previously available session on a 12" LP". These two session were part of the 10" series. side 1: 1. Jarm 2. Goodbye 3. Futurity 4. Shabozz 5. Tranqulity 6. Ittpanna Personel: Howard Mc Ghee (tp). Gigi Gryce (as&fl). Tal Farlow (g). Horace Silver (p). Percy Heath (bass). Walter Bolden (dm). New York, June 8, 1953 side 2: 1. Lover 2. Flamingo 3. Splash 4. Rock N' Rye 5. All Through the Night 6. Tina Personel: Tal Farlow (g). Don Aarone (g). Clyde Lombardi (bass). Joe Morello (dm). New York, November 4, 1953 Nice music. Edited July 2, 2004 by Matthew Quote
jazzbo Posted July 2, 2004 Report Posted July 2, 2004 I believe they also appeared on a TOCJ early cd of guitar sessions. Great sessions. . . probably nice to have them on vinyl. Quote
Matthew Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Great sessions. . . probably nice to have them on vinyl. Come... Come... The Dark Side beckons.... Buy a turntable... Quote
brownie Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 I believe they also appeared on a TOCJ early cd of guitar sessions. Great sessions. . . probably nice to have them on vinyl. I have the session with Howard McGhee and Gigi Gryce (BLP5024) and the two-guitar session (BLP5042) reunited on a French Blue Note 12'' LP that was released in the '70s. The liner notes say that Norman Granz hired Tal Farlow after hearing the BN albums. Quote
Leeway Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 Great sessions. . . probably nice to have them on vinyl. Come... Come... The Dark Side beckons.... Buy a turntable... Last year I had a chance to buy about 5 or 6 Tal Farlow Verve LPs. I think they were about $12-14 each. For some reason, I passed. Now I'm regretting that decision (or lack of decison). So my question is: Would I have been better off with the LPs, or does the Mosaic set supercede the LPs? In other words, is it better to have the Mosaic presentation of the music, albeit on CD, or the original LPs? Quote
Clunky Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 What I want to know is this, I've got and love, This is Tal Farlow (verve Elite) , Swing guitar (Verve By request) and the compilation Jazz Masters on Verve:Tal Farlow. So I'm only missing about half an Lps worth of Costa sides. Should I jump...oh decisions.. Quote
Matthew Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 (edited) Just go ahead and jump! The sound quality is outstanding on this Mosaic, plus they have some alternat takes on them. This set is an outstanding example of why Mosaic is top-of-the-line when it comes to quality. I admit that I haven't been too excited with Mosiac the past couple of years, the selections didn't excite me in the least, but the Farlow, 10+ on all levels. David Lee Roth even says: "Jump on this set!" Edited July 5, 2004 by Matthew Quote
Bill Nelson Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 Last Wednesday I jumped -- even with the 3 CDs (2 Jap, 1 Verve Elite) I've already got. When it arrives tomorrow* (it should be well past #500) it'll be the total, comprehensive package of all Verve recordings with superb mastering by Malcolm Addey. *Delayed Gratification is my middle name Quote
Bill Nelson Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 Gratification in action -- #529 is in the house and in heavy rotation. Expectations definately fulfilled. Quote
Tony Pusey Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 .....and still waiting...why oh why did I choose the surface mail option? But thanks for the heads up on the Blue Note 10 inch cd, I had forgotten all about that, and it is a compensation, helping me get through the wettest summer in Swedish memory. Quote

JohnS Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 Any sign of a Verve "International" set yet? Quote
Alfred Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Any sign of a Verve "International" set yet? Release date for us Europeans is 08/31/2004, referring to the German amazon-website. The price is € 122,90. But who wants to have this ASIN barcode number (B0002O3894) on the box… There is a short "recommendation" on the JazzEcho (Universal!) website (sorry, only in German). Quote
Alfred Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 BTW, did someone notice the stupid "Customer Reviews" on the Mosaic website concerning the Farlow box??! Mosaic Farlow Box Quote

Mosaic Farlow Box I guess Mosaic created their own review Forum. Maybe a bitter ex-Blue Note Board poster has found a new home. Edited August 14, 2004 by Tjazz Quote
