DTMX Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 For the past several months, I've been playing a CD as I drop off to sleep in the hopes that I'll improve my ear for music or at least drown out the tinnitus that keeps me awake. If I die in my sleep the last thing I'll hear will probably be Brahms' String Quintets or Sextets, or Dvorak's String Quartets or Quintets. Quote
Shrdlu Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Something like "To God Be The Glory" (by Fanny Crosby, no, not a relative of Harry Lillis) would about do it. And it won't be the least bit morbid, as I'm saved and will be going to be with the Lord for all eternity. "Even so, come, Lord Jesus." To God be the glory, great things he hath done, So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, Who yielded his life an atonement for sin, And opened the lifegate that all may go in. CHORUS Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice, Oh come to the Father through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory, great things he hath done. Another choice verse: Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus his Son, The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives. My friend, why not trust Jesus as your Saviour right now, and then you won't have any fear about dying. Quote

7/4 Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I don't want to hear anything. I want to die peacefully, in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers. a classic. Quote

brownie Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I don't believe in afterlife but... ...some Lester Young music will take me right up to Heaven! And, please, as late and as peacefully as possible! Quote
king ubu Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I don't believe in afterlife but... ...some Lester Young music will take me right up to Heaven! And, please, as late and as peacefully as possible! How about "Blue Lester"? Or the Jones-Smith Inc. sides... Good stuff to die to ubu Quote
king ubu Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Then we might add the question what film we would want to be screened, of course without tone, as our listening pleasure - our very last one - might be spoiled otherwise... I guess I would have the ball-scene of "Il Gattopardo", or the night-after of "L'avventura", or maybe the ending of "8 1/2", or a loop mixing all of these..., together with the game Mastroianni plays on that chess-floor in "La notte", and the "Have you ever been stung by a dead bee" think from "To Have And Have Not", as well as Lauren (with sound, this time), singin that corny old song in the casino in "The Big Sleep"... (that song's on the Kenton Forties Mosaic, by the way...) ubu Quote
paul secor Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I'm in no hurry to leave here, but maybe Jimmy Yancey playing "How Long Blues". Quote
Aggie87 Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 The Grateful Dead: Dark Star ...go for the version on grayfolded, which will get you a 103 minutes of Dark Star (spliced together by John Oswald). Quote

I don't want to throw cold water on anybody, but you do know that this is a Steven Wright quote, don't you? Quote
chris olivarez Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 So. We'll give Wright an assist. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I didn't, but I should have. It just sounds Wright... Quote
LAL Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I'd leave word for whomever to play "Take the A Train" at FULL volume. Maybe a blast of this exquisite song would jolt me back to life, even if for a few more minutes. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I'd start off with some Ayler processional hymns, like "Mothers," and close it out with Frank Wright's "Church Number Nine." Get 'em feelin' the spirit, y'know? Quote
Brandon Burke Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Nothing - too distracting. GOTTA STAY IN THE MOMENT BAYBEE!!!!! Damn, Jim.... I thought you'd turned into Dick Vitale for a second there. Imagine that eulogy: "Are you kidding me?! This guy and death is an M&Mer, baby! A mismatch! I mean he was awesome with a capital 'A', baby! He's an all Rolls Roycer!" B) Anyways, if was to chose anything it would be Mary Lou Williams "It Ain't Necessarily So" since that tune, from the opening seconds, sounds like it's about to fade away into a ghostly haze at any moment. So beautiful... Quote
