Now that many of the participants have received the discs, and further discussion on Answers to BFT#12 is fading away, let´s keep this thing alive!

And let´s do it in two separate threads, to make browsing and searching easier: one for disc 1, the "oficial" Blindfold Test #13, and one for the Bonus Disc.

Hope y´all are enjoying them!

Discuss Bonus Disc here!

B)

FYI: no real "theme" in any of the discs, just music! ;)

1. Fletcher Henderson?

2. Lester Young?

3. It seems almost familiar, but I just can't get a handle on it. Cedar Walton?

4. Is this track 13 on this?

5. I think this might be Jackie McLean. The oversimplified rationale: If a tenor makes me think he's playing alto, it's probably Getz. If an alto makes me think he's playing tenor, it's probably Jay Mac. I hope that's actually an alto : )

6. Dizzy Gillespie?

7. The composition is the same as track 3 of this. I know the composition from this album on ECM. I love the bassist's playing on both of them. I originally though it was the saxist's composition that was played on the ECM album, but the saxist himself doesn't seem to have participated in any recordings of that composition according to AMG.

8. Could be a Basie small group. The rhythm guitar definitely gives the feel of mid '50s or earlier.

9. Moments here made me think of Duke, but there's not enough ensemble playing. I'll guess Duke Ellington anyway.

10. Very lyrical. Waiting to hear if Jarrett noises start coming in. It's been a while, but I dont recall hearing the vocalizations on the ECM Staircase solo set. I'm going with Keith Jarrett.

11. Let's try Earl Hines.

This is a BFT disc compiled by a true jazz fan: music from all styles and periods. I really dig this versatility - muchas gracias otra vez!

So here are my guesses for the bonus disc:

#1 I have heard that, it may well still be hidden somewhere in the depths of my collection, but I don't have the time to dig it up right now. "Original Dixieland One-Step" or something like that?

# 2 Knew the tenor after one phrase, this may be his best solo IMHO. Pretty wild idea to have a ballad of such extended length on a disc at the time it was released. Beautiful album with a timeless quality about it. (AMG link - track 1)

# 3 Starts out as a typical Latin jazz hybrid, rhythmically, as the drummer plays a Brazilian samba, dtto. the bassist, but the piano riff is more Cuban. The horns play nice, but the pianist doesn't convince me. Would have liked it better if the drummer had left out the bass drum on the "one", which makes it sound more Brazilian, but this often confounds the horns and pianists. A nice track, but I like to hear a little more depth.

# 4 Variations of/on a famous saxophone player. Probably a little known, i.e. rare track. (AMG link - track 1 - there are other issues, of course)

# 5 Hmm ... an alto with a definite Trane vibe. Kenny Garrett. Drummer should be Brian Blade. Very competent cat, if this is Garrett he sure sounds more relaxed here than on the Trane studio record and the live date I saw on TV around the time that album was issued. ***1/2, **** for the drummer.

# 6 Woody'n'you by X'n'YZ ... this is one instance where a star soloist and a working band thrown together worked out! (AMG link)

# 7 Charlie Haden on bass? That flamenco strumming threw me off at first, because he doesn't play like that anymore. But overall, that must be him. The audience seems to know that tune - I do not. Should be Ornette and Dewey and Ed Blackwell. I can't listen to that in large doses, that's why I do not recognize the tune.

# 8 Very nice! Krupa on drums? Very well organized drum solo. Eldridge? Some Hawk disciple on tenor, but not the Hawk himself.

# 9 Sounds like these players had a lot of experience together, very loose and very together at the same time. Like the feathery beat of the drummer, almost like Frankie Dunlop, or rather a swing era Dunlop. Well, Dunlop played with Hamp a lot after Monk, but from the things I hear, that is not him. First trumpet soloist has me think of Harry Edison. Buddy Tate on tenor? Benny Carter on alto? Some latter day Norman Granz session issued on Pablo? These are all very experienced, personal swing era players having a good time without overdoing it. Something I really enjoy.

# 10 Not quite my cup of tea. He plays some chords that are too far from the basic tune, for my taste, and tends to lose the meter, although he stays on some subjective rhythmic pulse. If one choses a groove like this, I think he should stay in the time. He doesn't get me here. No idea who it is.

# 11 Same tune as # 1. Again, no idea. The horns are somewhat sloppy on the beat, the soprano just ondulates on top of it without a tight connection to the beat, the trumpet is a little better in that respect, and the trombonist almost has it down. If one compares that with the opening track one can see how competent these early jazz players were, much better, especially ryhthmically, than their latter day imitators. I go for the older version.

Hope I find the time to take one more listen to the bonus disc this evening ...

OK, just sped through bonus disc, here are a few thoughts and guesses:

1) This sound is too "old timey'' for my taste. Regret that I've never really been able to get into this period of jazz except when star improvisers are involved.

2) Well, it's the old standard "Figure and Spirit"

:D as Konitz liked to call it. Sounds like Paul Gonsalves on tenor to me. Don't know who the others are.

4) Hawkins?

5) "Wonderful! Wonderful!". Only have this by Rollins in his great NEWK'S TIME session, but this of course is an alto. Could be Gary Bartz, I'm guessing.

6) Obviously Dizzy on his composition "Alga Bueno" or "Woody'n You" (one and the same) and I would think it's late period Diz, i.e., sometime in the '70s

7) That big "rubber band" sound on bass gave the bassist away. And I believe it's his composition in honor of a fallen Cuban revolutionary figure. The rest of the group is too easy - O.C., D.R. and probably E.B.

8) This sounds like a variation on "Sweet Georgia Brown". Tenor could be Chu Berry.

11) This is like #1 in terms of its ancientness (is that a word?). No guess, but I really don't like this sound.

Track 1: I am woefully lacking in the Dixieland department. HAFC™, obviously, but I intend to look further into this. This stuff SWINGS!

Track 2: “Body and Soul,” of course. Now if I can just narrow it down to the 3- or 4-million folks who’ve ever done this! I’ll guess Dexter Gordon, just based on the length of the track. Don’t know who the trumpet player is. Byrd, maybe?

Track 3: Seems like I’ve heard this before, too! HAFC™, but this sucker better not be OOP!!! Piano player sounds AWFULLY familiar. Corea, maybe?

Track 4: I think I’ve heard this before. Sounds like Prez unaccompanied. Sure like the sound of it: like walking down a city street and hearing some guy wailing away inside his apartment with the windows open.

Track 5: HAFC™; sounds European to these ears.

Track 6: Yeah, and how many trumpet players have recorded this sucker? HAFC™!

Track 7: Sounds like some Mingus band, Max on the drums? Lost interest halfway thru the lengthy bass solo.

Track 8: Sounds like Django. I remember he did some work with a tenor and a trumpet.

Track 9: Well, I hadda figure he’d put a Duke tune somewhere on his BFT! HAFC™ as to which song it is, or which era for that matter!

Track 10: HAFC™. Lost interest about halfway thru. May need to listen to it closer later.

Track 11: Brave Combo? :g

I’ve always been wary of 2-disc BFTs, but this one MORE than justifies having more than one disc! This BFT is gonna break me. AGAIN!

Okay, my computer's working again, and I omitted my disc 2 guesses from the other thread  , and now I'm ready to admit how clueless I am on this disc so far...

Haven't had much time for this yet, and I'm stumped on most of it anyway.

Track 1 - This is before my time... AND I think before my parents' time (and they were born in 1921!)

Track 2 = Body and soul. VERY nice! I don't recognize this recording, but I like! I'm trying to figure out why I've never heard this before.

Track 5 = "Wonderful wonderful" (NOT wunnerful wunnerful, nor does it have anything to do with Larry Welk). Sonny Rollins recorded this tune, as did Rene' Thomas, as did... Johnny Mathis. :) Nice tune. Don't know who this is.

Track 6 = Woody'n You. Sounds like Dizzy to me. Not sure what recording.

Track 8 = Sweet georgia brown changes. That's all I can come up with right now...

This disc was much more difficult for me than Disc 1.

I have listened to that bonus disc just once. Will tune in again. It reflects on Agustin's broad scope and good taste! Very nice one.

Found only a few.

Track 2 was easy with a favorite pianist and a distinctive ducal tenor.

Opening track from this album:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Ags5gtq2zbu46

Track 4 was easy too. One of the very rare solo from a Giant. It's the first two sides from this Italian bootleg that I bought years ago:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Anq6ibkk9hakx

Track 6 was instantly recognizable with a great trumpet player on a weak session playing 'Woodyn' You':

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Aea1gtq1zbu46

Track 8 a live version of 'Song For Che' with the composer nicely featured. Don't have that version with Ornette plus Dewey (?) and Blackwell (?). A bootleg?

Have only guesses for some others:

- Bill Coleman on track 8? not sure about that with a tenor sounding like the Giant soloing on track 4?, probably recorded in Paris,

- nice jam on track 9 with players including Benny Carter,

- is that Paul Bley playing solo on track 10?

Will have to relisten to the full disc. It's going to be a pleasure!

Why in Paris? Do you hear that Parisian thoroughfare sound?

:P

Suggestions made for personnel on Track 8:

-Basie small group

-Krupa on drums?... Eldridge? Some Hawk disciple on tenor, but not the Hawk himself.

-Chu Berry

-Django

-Bill Coleman? A tenor sounding like the Giant soloing on track 4?

You gotta clarify!!!

Would you bet your life it´s Benny Carter? ^_^

Well, mikeweil made the same guess!!!!

And brownie plus mikeweil can be a very convincing team....

Here's your clarification. I'm sticking with Chu Berry on tenor, add Roy Eldridge on trumpet, and here's an educated guess, Big Sid Catlett on drums since I know all three played together on a late '30s Commodore date. It's the idiot savant in me. Now you tell me if I'm right.

Truth be told, it was all of them, in what was actually a precursor to the famed Norman Granz Jam Sessions. :P:D:lol:

We're talking about track 9, right? That track is a mind blower. Can't recall having heard this before. Sounds like some Basieites are there (Jo Jones, Sweets). But this goes on sans Basie.

And of course, it's not Carter!

We'll get the album with this jam when the Truth is revealed...

Afraid I couldn't get very much on the bonus disc. I do know that #2 is "Body and Soul" and I know the tune of #5 but can't name it. #6 is I think "Woody'n' You" by Dizzy with perhaps Lalo Schiffrin on piano. That's all I can guess at but I did enjoy it a lot. Thanks a lot, EKE.

No, brownie: I compiled the guesses for personnel on track 8.

Someone guessed it was a Basie-ites small group.

I threw you the glove on track 9 regarding Benny Carter.... ;)

Here's further clarification for track #8.  It is the 4th cut on this.

:tup:tup:tup Three points shot, MartyJazz!!! I have it in a different CD, but that´s it.

(Sssshhhh, don´t tell anybody)

B)

I had to search for that link because I only have that cut and an alternate take(!) on LP. :excited:

Guesses for Track 5 have been:

-Jackie McLean

-Kenny Garrett

-Gary Bartz

-"sounds European to these ears"

Interesting!

BTW: the tune title has already been correctly identified. :tup

And even more interesting guesses for Track 3, varying from Cedar Walton to Chick Corea.

I thought this one would be recognized: doesn´t the arranging ring any bell?

(I shouldn´t give so many clues... but it´s funny being at this side of the game :D )
