wesbed Posted June 20, 2004 Report Posted June 20, 2004 I'm going to see Dodgeball this afternoon. I didn't want to see it since the advertisements, to me, looked stupid. Yet, I'm going to see it with a friend. From reading the sales figures, it looks like Dodgeball opened with greater sales than The Terminal (I saw The Terminal on Friday night). Quote

wesbed Posted June 20, 2004 Author Report Posted June 20, 2004 Let us know how you like it. Sounds like a loony movie! Yeah. I have my share of personal issues. But, I'm not sure I'm loony enough to 'get' the movie. I'm leaving soon... to get some lunch first, next, the movie. Quote
Saxophone__Vagina Posted June 20, 2004 Report Posted June 20, 2004 Extremely funny, really cheesy and corny, but in a very good way. Quote

wesbed Posted June 21, 2004 Author Report Posted June 21, 2004 (edited) I watched 'Dodgeball' last night. The movie was dumb, yet good, and sometimes quite funny. I don't laugh easily at a movie and I'm not much into Ben Stiller. However, I caught myself laughing at the antics in 'Dodgeball' (as much as I didn't intend to laugh). Considering my lack of appreciation for Ben Stiller, he was quite good in his roll. The way he looked and the way he spoke, I would have hardly known it was him if I didn't already know. The movie showed me that Ben Stiller 'can' act and 'can' be funny. The good thing about this movie, to me, it's an old-fashioned raunchy and moronic comedy. It was good to be able to laugh without a care. Some parts of the movie are slapstick and thrown at you very fast. As soon as you quit chuckling about Scene A, you're right back to laughing about Scene B. It was fun to sit through the movie, not thinking about the news, politics, or any of the recent negative situations of the world. I departed from the movie in good spirits, then went to Applebee's for buffalo wings and beer (in the same parking lot as the movie theater), with my female companion. JSngry Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Did anybody else actually get to experience dodgeball (the game) in elementary school as conducted by sadistic coaches who woud get soccer balls, inflate them as hard as possible, and then look the other way while the class bullies held kids down so they could be hit at close range by a full-force throw in whatever area of the body appealed to the thrower at the time? Ah, the wonder years... Quote

Hey, be careful. I was one of the kids that got held down. Quote

doubleM Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 After getting hit really hard a few times, I learned to catch the ball. It saved my ass a few times, and then I eventually became a goalie on the soccer team. That is, until I started smoking herb and lost all interest in prep sports. Quote
BERIGAN Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Played a little Dodgeball, anyone play bombardment? The Dodgeball we played was in a circle... bombardment was teams on each side of the gym, you couldn't cross the center line, and I think there were other lines you were not supposed to cross either (Hey, we are going back to the 70's here!) If someone caught the ball you threw, you had to go to the sidelines and wait for someone to catch a ball, then you were back in....(Is at all like dodgeball?) Anyway, bombardment was one of the very few games I was any good at...went from a public school that was 50% black, to one closer to my Grandmother...a lily white public school...why do I mention this? Well, switching schools in the 3rd grade I found out that I was used to playing with the brothers (And sisters) and that they threw harder! I adapted to that fact. I learned to throw pretty hard as well. So, first day of Gym class, I make LOTS of new friends! I threw the ball like I always did...knocked a girl down, her glasses fell off, made her cry. So, just threw to the boys...knocked a boy down, made him cry. Gym coach is mad at me, everyone was mad at me, so I cried....ah sweet memories! what was I supposed to do? Not throw hard? Well, I learned to throw a little softer, people stopped clinging to the back wall. I recall catching 2 balls at once even! Of course, some bastard had to throw one when I still had them in my arms! Dave James Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 We played something called Prison Ball when I was in grade school. It was a little like the game Berigan describes except that if someone threw the ball at you and you didn't catch it, you didn't go to the sidelines but to "prison". That was a lined off area at either end of the court. The ball could be thrown over the top by one team to those on their side who were in prison and if they got the ball, threw it at someone on the other side and they missed it, then they went to their prison and you got out. That made for some interesting back and forth play. Like Dodgeball and Bombardment, the older, bigger guys - usually the 7th of 8th grade boys - held sway on one team and anyone else who wanted to play was on the other. That pretty much guaranteed the outcome. Not much fun when you weren't in those grades. Lots of fun when you finally were. Up over and out. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 (edited) I sure missed out on dodgeball by being in a British-run boarding school in M'Babane. . .playing cricket and hockey and soccer and rugby instead! Edited June 22, 2004 by jazzbo Quote
