TheMusicalMarine Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 Good day to all of you. I'm looking for some feedback on the following Jazz In Hollywood titles, on the Original Jazz Classics label: Herbie Harper Harry Babasin/Bob Enevoldsen Steve White Quartet Virgil Gonsalves/Steve White Bud Shank/Lou Levy Right now Tower is having a 25% off sale for all OJC titles, so I thought I'd pick these up if the recommendations are positive. Thanks Quote
RDK Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 It might be cheaper to order the FresH Sounds "Jazz in Hollywood" box Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 Aren't these titles also included in the 3-CD Nocturne set? Or is that the set to which you're referring, RDK? In either case, you should definitely check that set out, Musical Marine. Cadence carries it for $40... Dusty Groove has it for $24, when it's in stock... Quote
brownie Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 The Steve White Quartet date was missing from the box. It's worth chasing. Quote
JSngry Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 How does the Steve White Nocturne date compare with his Liberty date? Quote
brownie Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 Since I enjoyed the OJC Steve White, I did not hesitate to get the 'Jazz Mad' Liberty LP when I found a copy a couple of years ago. Turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. The session never seems to take off. Don't think it was ever reissued. If you have to get one, the OJC reissue is the one to chase. Quote
JSngry Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 Thank you! I too was underwhelmed by the Liberty date, so when I heard all the fuss about his other one, I had to wonder. Quote
TheMusicalMarine Posted June 19, 2004 Author Report Posted June 19, 2004 Thanks for the heads-up. I'd heard of the Complete Nocturne set and was planning on getting it at some point; didn't know the material was the same. And now Dustygroove just recently got a few copies in stock. Quote
RDK Posted June 20, 2004 Report Posted June 20, 2004 Aren't these titles also included in the 3-CD Nocturne set? Or is that the set to which you're referring, RDK? Yep. Brain fart... Quote
RDK Posted June 20, 2004 Report Posted June 20, 2004 Hmmm. Just so there's no confusion, GOM: I meant that I had a brain fart not that you were one. Quote
Vincent, Paris Posted June 20, 2004 Report Posted June 20, 2004 (edited) To me, the Fresh Sound 3-CD boxset is much more worth getting than the Fantasy issue. It includes a beautiful 84-page booklet with many many rare and unseen pictures from the recording sessions, remembrances by most of the players (Bud Shank, Herbie Harper, Shorty Rodgers, Harry Babasin, Lou Levy...), all the original cover art and liner notes, and more. This is a real labor of love by Jordi Pujol, one of the greatest fan of West Coast Jazz, who made that set with the collaboration of Roy Harte and Harry Babasin before they died. Fantasy later licensed the musical material but didn't accomplished the work Pujol done. Exact title of the boxset is :"The Complete Nocturne Recordings, Jazz in Hollywood Series". Have a look > here < to learn more. Edited June 20, 2004 by Vincent, Paris Quote
