WD45 Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 One Final Note review... Hmmm... they seem less than impressed. I like a lot of OFN, but have to disagree w/them on this one. Seems like they obsess more about the package than the music. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 (edited) I think the packaging is "over the top consumerism". So they found a way to sell this to the "concerned consumer" crowd. Best of all cynical worlds. B-) "Class" don't mean mass. Edited December 22, 2004 by Chuck Nessa Quote
JSngry Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Best of all cynical worlds. B-) Indeed! Quote
GregK Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 so after a few months with this box, what does everyone think? Is it worth the $99 price, with all those interviews? I mean it would be interesting to hear them once, but I don't know how many times I would go back to hear the interviews. Quote
brownie Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 The interviews were bonuses. I listened to them once and may return to them but not right now. But it's the music that counts. And those CDs get a lot of play from my part. A unique box from a unique musician! Quote
alankin Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 And even if you subtract the interview discs, the set's available for a pretty darned good price! Quote
GregK Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 I bought it today for $47-that's after I traded in $55 worth of used CDs that I haven't listened to in almost a decade. This has to be the most luxurious box set I've ever seen! Probably not the best place to start with Ayler, but I couldn't resist Quote
JSngry Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Probably not the best place to start with Ayler, but I couldn't resist Look it it this way - once you've covered/digested/etc the stuff that is the best place to start, you'll be ready for this stuff, and you will have it at your ready disposal (and for a sweet price, no less!). "Planning ahead", that is, anticipating where one's tastes may likely go and buying things like this for "future use" is not a bad strategy at all, especially when it comes to music and items such as this, neither of which are exactly "well tended too" in the mainstream marketplace over time. jazzbo Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Hmmmh. . . in a way with those earliest recordings, with the Taylor piece, with the interviews and all the tremendous info in the book, this IS the way to get started on Ayler. Greg, I think you're in for a real journey that I'm betting you'll enjoy. Quote
JSngry Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Good point, Lon. Sometimes, depending on the individual, the beginning is the best place to start. I would, however, advise that if the stuff in this box doesn't "connect" right away, for whatever reason(s), to at least give SPIRITUAL UNTIY and/or some of the currently available Impulse! material a shot before coming to any hard and fast conclusions. Quote
GregK Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 I've listened to the first disc and most of disc 2-this stuff is incredible. Why did I know nothing about Ayler before this box?? Those trio recordings on disc one have some great interplay between the musicians. I can't wait to listen to this whole set. Between the Art Ensemble (Nessa box set, and some individual titles) and this Ayler box, I've acquired some fascinating music in the last 6 weeks that is going to keep me busy for years. Is this the first release of any material recorded at Coltrane's funeral? Quote
John B Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Is this the first release of any material recorded at Coltrane's funeral? officialy, yes. You are in for a real treat as you start exploring Ayler. When you are ready to move on past the box I would highly recommend grabbing Spiritual Unity and Spirits Rejoice next. If you do a quick search there have been lots of great recommendations posted fairly recently. Quote
