brownie Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 RCA France has released the following items in their RCA Gold Series: - Art Blakey 'Au Theatre des Champs-Elysees' (the November 15, 1959 concert at Theatre des Champs-Elysees with Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Walter Davis, Jymie Merritt), - Lou Bennett 'Amen' (smoking session with organist Bennet, Jimmy Gourley, Jean-Marie Ingrand and Kenny Clarke), - Lou Bennett 'Enfin!' (with Rene Thomas), - Guy Lafitte 'Jambo' (with Sonny Grey on trumpet, George Arvanitas, Jimmy Gourley), - Guy Lafitte 'Blues In Summertime' (with french horn players, Raymond Fol and Art Taylor), - Guy Lafitte 'Sugar and Spice' (with the Four Bones and Raymond Fol), - Martial Solal 'Sans Tambour, Ni Trompette' (1970 date with two bass players Jean-Francois Jenny-Clarke and Gilbert Rovere and no drums as the title indicates), - Martial Solal 'En Solo', a 1971 session. All are 24bit remasters. No bonus tracks added except on one of the Lafitte issues (not Jambo). Too bad that the Art Blakey unhas some of the other numbers that the Blakey Messengers played at the 1959 concert. Not sure this was ever reissued (Japan??). Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 I have the Lou Bennett LP, from the Bastards, and I agree with Brownie, it definitely smokes! Quote
DrJ Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Thanks for the heads up Dave, the Bennetts and Lafittes look mighty tempting. Quote
Jim R Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Too bad that the Art Blakey unhas some of the other numbers that the Blakey Messengers played at the 1959 concert. Not sure this was ever reissued (Japan??). Not sure about CD (I would think so), but it was reissued in Japan on vinyl at one time. Regarding the Bennetts, I haven't heard AMEN, but I've had ENFIN for years, and it's an old favorite (I got a BMG France CD reissue through an importer about five years ago). Personally, I strongly prefer Rene Thomas to Jimmy Gourley. Quote

brownie Posted June 13, 2004 Author Report Posted June 13, 2004 'Jambo' is very good and is highly rated. Not familiar with the other two. Will be soon! Quote
Dave James Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 (edited) I spent some time this weekend getting my ears around the three RCA Lafittes. I would rate them as follows: Sugar & Spice, Blues in Sumertime and Jamba!. Not that any of them are bad, but that's just my personal preference. I especially like the handful of cuts on S&S where Lafitte is backed by four trombones. That's some seriously good stuff. Lafitte is a nice player. Handles the blues and ballads especially well. He's right out of Coleman Hawkins and that's never more apparent than on S&S. If you like Hawkins, you're gonna like this guy a lot. Nicely remastered sound too. Recommended. Up over and out. brownie Posted July 27, 2004 Author Report Posted July 27, 2004 Up because nobody seems to have paid attention to the reissue of the rare 'Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees' from November 1959. That's the Messengers unit with Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter in one of his very first appearance with Blakey, Walter Davis and Jymie Merritt. I don't think this concert was ever released outside of France (maybe in Japan?). The concert was one of the best from the series that Blakey and the Messengers gave in Paris at the time. Much better than the December 1959 concert - also at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees - that was released by Fontana as 'Paris Jam Session', the one with Barney Wilen and Bud Powell added on some tracks. The Messengers are smoking on the November concert from the opening track 'Close Your Eyes'. This was also the occasion of the initial appearance of Lee Morgan's superb tune 'Goldie'. The sound on the RCA reissue is a bit shrill but the sound on the original French RCA was not perfect. This is a very worthy reissue that should not be overlooked. Quote
couw Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 still not out in Germany... thanks for the heads up, this will be something to look for when I visit Paris. Particularly also the Lafitte disks. Quote
bertrand Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Brownie, Actually, 'Goldie' was originally recorded on Wynton Kelly's Kelly Great LP (August 1959) under the title 'What Know'. Bertrand. Quote
Clunky Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 still not out in Germany... thanks for the heads up, this will be something to look for when I visit Paris. Particularly also the Lafitte disks. These nor the MPS reissues seem to hitting the UKs shores, I'll wait a little longer. All these Blakey Paris sessions is a bit confusing if you're not paying attention !!! Quote

Bluerein Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Yes it was reissued in Japan in 1997 as a 20 bit jewel case BVCJ-7415. Also not good sounding but indeed a great session. Cheers, Reinier Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 I have a jewel case edition from BMG France 1994. Quote
