.:.impossible Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 Hello all. Does anyone have any advice on smaller speakers. What to avoid, what to look/listen for? Any particular models that you would consider a steal? I'm not audiophile level, so keep that in mind. Even recommendations from all you regular people out there would be very much appreciated! Thankee. Quote
Matthew Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 All depends on your price range. I have Dynaudio 52's on my rig, which cost $800.00, and they have a great sound to them. Very good detail. So, in terms of speakers, buy the best you can, and build around them. Quote
clandy44 Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 I've got Dynaudio 1.3 MKII-small but pricey at about $2400. On the other hand, they sound terrific, with incredibles highs and a solid bass. If the price new is too steep, try the classifieds on www.audiogon.com. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 I had a pair of KEF Q15.2 that I thought were nifty. Very inexpensive, too. $250 new for the pair. Quote
catesta Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 Check out a pair of Bose 301 V's. I think they can be bought for about $ 350. Quote
Claude Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 Recommendations in different price ranges: Entry-level: - KEF Q1 - Dynaudio Audience 52 For serious audiophiles ($2000/pair): - B&W Nautilus 805 - Dynaudio Contour 1.3, 1.3SE Dream speakers ($4000/pair): - Dynaudio Special 25 - B&W 805 Signature - KEF Reference 201 All those speakers must be placed on good stands to give their full potential. They also need more powerful amps than comparable floorstanders. Quote
Leeway Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 I have small Mission speakers, they sound great. I think Mission does a good job with small speakers, very British, very musical. Audio Advisor has them at good (read highly reasonable) prices. Worth checking out. Quote
.:.impossible Posted March 18, 2003 Author Report Posted March 18, 2003 Thanks guys. I absolutely forgot about this thread! I appreciate the feedback. Believe me when I say $250 is more in my price range than $2000. One day... Tomorrow I am buying a 155 Ride Nation, new Ride bindings and 32 boots, all for under $500! That's right, $500. rIDe natION Quote
jazzhound Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Monitor Audio B2 reviewed in Feb/March Audiophile gets my vote. List is 399 and it has some bottom end. I heard earlier version of this speaker and it blew me away. Coherent sound, reminded me of being in recording studio. This is the one! Quote
Noj Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Tomorrow I am buying a 155 Ride Nation, new Ride bindings and 32 boots, all for under $500! That's right, $500. rIDe natION Nice. I haven't been boarding in a month, I'm jonesing big time. Quote
Joe G Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 I had a pair of KEF Q15.2 that I thought were nifty. Very inexpensive, too. $250 new for the pair. I now own those KEFs, and have no complaints. Warm sound, good bass response. Quote
doubleM Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Kudos to the Paradigm Titan bookshelf speaks. Under two-fitty, and worth twice as much. Where I shop, they'll even give you their full value towards a new (and more $) pair after 1 year. Quote
desertblues Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Monitor Audio B2 reviewed in Feb/March Audiophile gets my vote. List is 399 and it has some bottom end. I heard earlier version of this speaker and it blew me away. Coherent sound, reminded me of being in recording studio. This is the one! Another vote for the Monitor Audios- these definitely fit the criteria, small size & reasonable $, and they sound great. I have seen them @ $100 less than retail. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 24, 2003 Author Report Posted April 24, 2003 Hey desertblues, any tips on where to find these speakers around that price? Thanks! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 Cary, I've read raves about these as well as the previous "2s" being outstanding. Try calling Audio Lab in Harvard Square. Easier to find than that gigg you were looking for: 36 J.F.K. St., The Garage,Harvard Square CAMBRIDGE MA 02138 617/864-1144...right next to Newbury Comics. Give a shout if you find them there and I can give better directions. vint Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 26, 2003 Author Report Posted April 26, 2003 Speaking of Canada, I checked out a pair of Paradigm Mini Monitors the other day here in Providence. I don't consider myself an audiophile, but I thought these sounded pretty good. The bass was not so big, but it seemed to be enough. I will probably bring a couple of discs in this weekend to check them out again. I was browsing ubid.com today and came across a couple of speakers that I was unfamiliar with. Does anyone know anything about these: Monitor Audio MON2.5 (150W) 14.5 x 8.25 x 8.25 Front Ported Monitor Audio MONITOR 7 (70W) 34.3 x 16.5 x 17.5 Wharfedale Crystal 20 (100W) 312 x 217 x 236 ? Has anyone ever bought from ubid? I have a friend who highly recommends it. Thanks. Quote
Gregore Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 I suggest Nautilus 802 and 805 for front and surround and HTM2 for your center. Quote
