Hardbopjazz Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 I have outgrown the area in my house where I store all my CD's. Now they are beginning to pile up on top of the stereo equipment. I have a 200 CD play which is filled. I took the cases of these and boxed them away. For now this works. I have 13 upright CD shelves from Ikea, which each hold 180 CD's. I have them filled every way possible. No room to add anymore. How are the rest of you people here finding the space for all your CD’s? Quote
wesbed Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 I'm not much help. Here is my non-jazz collection. Other, better, ideas may be found by clicking here. Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 With four CD racks from Sauder, running $60 a piece and holding about 550 CDs each, I was running out of shelf space, and also running out of floor space to add more racks. So, I made the big break, and switched to a sleeve/three ring binder system. I found 8-to-a-page Case Logic sleeves real cheap (I still have plenty of sleeves left over, and my total cost for the sleeves was well under $200), and bought the binders at Office Depot. Bought new Sauder book cases, and now, my 2500 CD collection fits in less than two full two shelf bookcases. The one drawback: I couldn't keep the inserts and tray cards in the binders, so I carefully bundled them up in rubber bands, in alphabetical order, and boxed them up. The biggest drawback there, frankly, is the fact that as I've worked on my next BFT, I've had to dig through the bundles to find the sidemen/recording info. One big advantage, in addition to the space saving: if we're ever in a Hurricane evacuation order, I will have no problem getting my CDs safely out of harm's way. The last time there was a serious hurricane threat, and this was when my collection was much smaller, I considered the likelihood that I'd have to evacuate and it took me hours to box up the CDs and lug them to the car. And if I'd actually been forced to go, I couldn't have taken anything else with me other than the dog. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 (edited) Has anyone tried this type of CD Sleeve? Not a 3-ring binder deal, and the inserts and tray cards remain with the discs. Looks like a good way to save some space, but it seems like it might make things harder to find. Edited June 6, 2004 by Uncle Skid Quote

Brad Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 That one from Jazz Loft looks interesting, the one by Evan less so: where do you put the inserts. To me, that's critical. I'm constantly making room. But even that capability is running out of usable space. Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 Can you read the spines on the jazzloft sleeves? I like to be able to easily find the music I'm looking for. Quote
Parkertown Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 Something I did recently to create more space was to put all the cds that were from boxed sets BACK into their boxes. A lot of them were just filed in with the regular cds and the boxes were in storage. But now I have an area just for the boxes. It actually ended up creating a lot of space. Quote
Claude Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 (edited) I would avoid getting the CDs into slimmer cases, because one will have to store the empty jewel cases somewhere anyhow (don't forget that many CDs are now in digipacs). Try to find or make shelves that are higher, and that can be placed in two rows (a smaller one that slides sideways in front of the large one). CDs are only 13cm deep, so it should be possible to store them in two rows. Edited June 6, 2004 by Claude Quote

Brad Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 Chris, That's awesome. My son, who is waiting for me to get off the computer, said you have a lot more cds than I do. Quote

jacknife Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 When I ran out of space, my wife suggested ebay as in SELL now! Actually, I think it was a bit more than a suggestion! Quote
king ubu Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 How about more shelves? This one holds 4,128 CDs/ That's about what I would need, could I afford... I have all my CDs in jewel cases, but it's quite a mess these days, too, and getting worse with each acquisition... Quote
Christiern Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 How about more shelves? This one holds 4,128 CDs/ I´m sure you have at least three of them... This is my largest one, but I have the equivalent of 2 more. As for ladder, I have a 2-step folding step ladder from Woolworth (so you know I've had it a long time!). EKE BBB did you get my PM on AAJ? Quote
take5 Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 I've also gone with the three-ring binder / sleeve solution. I've moved quite a bit these past few years and the thought of schlepping all those boxes again made my panic and I knew I had to change my storage solution. I have ~2000 CDs. Here's how I do it: CDs that come in anything other than a standard jewel case (black or clear spine) do not go in the binders, they go on racks. SACDs, digipacks, box sets, etc. I have 4 CDs to a page, because I put the booklet on the back. The back liners go in seperate binders, taking up two small binders, and I use transparent report covers and paper clips to hold them. However, I've been thinking about taking all liners completely out of the binders and storing them somewhere else. I know have 11 binders that are full of CDs, and this would cut it down to 5 or 6. I just need to figure out a way to keep the liners in way that they don't get damaged and I can find them easily. The rubber-band/box solution does not seem appealing. As for the jewel cases themselves, I just throw them out. I keep a few of each kind around in case I need to sell some of the CDs. Quote
