Son-of-a-Weizen Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 I'm surprised that these new 24-bit jobbers haven't started trickling into the usual spots over here...or have they? Quote
Late Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 I'm surprised that these new 24-bit jobbers haven't started trickling into the usual spots over here...or have they? The Bards have some. They're listing them at $18.99 a pop. (I'm going the Hiroshi route.) Quote

Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 So what is the consensus of the sound here now that these have been selling for some time. No more upgrading for me but I did pick up "Davis Cup" in the 6XXX series a ways back and could not get it out of my hands fast enough. Nearly RVG series to my system. Guess I need tubes! Luckily I scored a regular old TOCJ cheap and am very happy. Quote

Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I felt it extremely bright. Granted is was nice and clean but I recall it did have a bit of hizz on the drop out soft spots. I don't get the chance to A/B much as I never have two sames at once but did here and was sold on the old time warmth offered by the 16 bit-er. Something about the higher rezz that ends up just a bit annoying over the course of a whole disc. Almost as if there is an above sonic level that gets to you after a while. Granted I'm running a solid state system so maybe that leftover zone of shrilliness up top is easily overcome by the out of the wall warmth offered with blocks or tubes. Just my two yen (for what that's worth ). Quote

Late Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 The TOCJ24 edition of Page One is the best I've heard to date. (Note: Haven't heard the older TOCJ, but have heard the McMaster, the JRVG, and the RVG. Strangely, perhaps, I like the McMaster the best of these three.) Quote
Degiorgio Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 do these new budget priced 24bit Japanese editions not have bonus tracks/alt takes? KD Quote
JohnJ Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 do these new budget priced 24bit Japanese editions not have bonus tracks/alt takes? KD No bonus/alt tracks, at least on those that I have seen. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 If you trade bits for music, you lose. B-) Quote
Degiorgio Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 thx for the info.... how about the JRVG mini-sleeve editions? Bonus tracks or no? KD Quote
Bluerein Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 except for the latest batches TOCJ-95xx I believe they don't have extra tracks. Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 If you trade bits for music, you lose. B-) That depends on how you like your music - I prefer the sound of the TOCJs, they sound much more musical to me than (J)RVGs and McMastered Blue Note reissues. Quote
Bol Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 TOCJ-6502 Jackie McLean – Demon’s Dance Am I right in thinking that this is the only one of this series that had not appeared as a part of the older Blue Note Works 16- or 20-bit TOCJs? Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 That could be. There are also a handful of TOCJs ('Here to Stay' & 'Jubilee Shout') that, for some strange reason, never made it into the JRVG column. Quote
Alfred Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 If you trade bits for music, you lose. B-) Every KING or even Toshiba-EMI LP Reissue (except the latest BN 65 anniversary - which is a CD on vinyl!!!) sounds better than the next XX-bit CD re-re-re-release. I'm veeeeeeeeery happy with my still growing LP-collection. Anyone interested in JRVG's, TOCJ's, TOCJ24's, McMaster, .........?! Quote
jbs-tom Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 oh yes i am - hello to hamburg from munich collecting japan blue note lps an tocj cds (with jewel cases) but i do like the japan BN 65 anniversary , don't you ? ... maybe not that good as the early king bn issues but such good as the toshiba releases later tom Quote
