brownie Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 Miles Davis 'Doo-Bop' Bill Evans 'Theme From The VIPS And Other Great Sounds' Chet Baker 'Blood, Chet And Tears' Quote

sjarrell Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 Chet Baker 'Blood, Chet And Tears' These words, alone, make me cringe. Poor Chesney had fallen upon hard times. Have you seen the Mariachi Brass LP with the very sad hat? Anybody got a scan? Quote
dsgtrane Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 McCoy Tyner "What The World Needs Now" More syrup than a maple tree! Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 Lucky Thompson did a Barbara Streisand record, yes? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 Joe Henderson - Porgy and Bess Not the worst thing ever, but it's the one Joe album that really doesn't do it for me. Quote
wesbed Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 (edited) Blood, Chet & Tears. This does look bad. Barf alert. >AMG Link< Sugar, sugar, Evil Ways, You've Made Me So Very Happy? Edited June 1, 2004 by wesbed Quote
brownie Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 (edited) Blood, Chet & Tears. This does look bad. Barf alert. >AMG Link< Sugar, sugar, Evil Ways, You've Made Me So Very Happy? Not only does Blood, Chet and Tears looks bad. It sounds terrible. Hope Chet had some good time with whatever money he got from the record session. The album is a rare one but it MUST be avoided. Like the plague Edited June 2, 2004 by brownie Quote
JohnJ Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 Bobby Hutcherson - 'Natural Illusions' I love Bobby, but this with strings effort is truly awful. Sold it immediately. Quote
brownie Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 Lucky Thompson did a Barbara Streisand record, yes? He played several Streisand songs on the 'Happy Days Are Here Again' on Prestige but that was not a dud. Pretty good album in fact. Will spin the LP later today. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 (edited) Wes Montgomery- Road Song and Down Here on the Ground. Both suck. I have a theory to real reason Wes died, and that is, he had to record these two albums and it killed him. There is so much sap on these two albums they should be at IHOP. The greatest guitarist of all time, had to record albums like this to feed his family. It must have led to his demise. Edited June 2, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
ajf67 Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 Sonny Rollins "The Solo Album." I was so dissappointed by this. Sounds like he didn't think about the date at all, and just showed up and warmed up, kinda, for an hour. No connected thoughts or anything. Really bad. Stanley Turrentine: he did a few for Fantasy in the 70s with strings that were just awful in my opinion. "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" was one. I can't think of the others. Whew! What's that smell??? Quote
doubleM Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 Not every artist had a dud. Gigi Gryce?!! Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 YOU ARE OUT OF CONTROL--- I BET BOOBY W/ STRINGS IS A SPLENDID AFFAIR. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM WITH STRINGS. Quote

bertrand Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Bitches' Brew is just a rip-off of Larry Young's Mother Ship anyway. Bertrand. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Kenny G.'s...um...wait a minute; I'm having trouble choosing... Quote
BruceH Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 To paraphrase Ken Miller: "Cuz strings BLOW." Quote
Morganized Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 Does anyone here besides me find Jackie McLean's New and Old Gospel a big disappointment. In this instance we not only get a less than stellar performance from Jackie, we get one from Ornette as well....IMHO Frankly, I think Tippin the Scales has more going for it and everyone around here seems to hate that one. What's the verdict on this one. Dud or Not? Quote
JSngry Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 (edited) Besides BLOOD...., the various Mariachi Brass duds (there were several), there's this winner, along the lines of Bud Shank's MICHELLE "hit" album: Edited June 5, 2004 by JSngry Quote

What's the verdict on this one. Dud or Not? I feel the same about NAOG. I would have enjoyed Jackie and Ornette both playing alto and going at it a bit. I have to say I have zero interest in Ornette's trumpet and violin playing. Love the alto (and tenor) though. Quote

Not that I would whole-heartedly recommend it to everyone, but for those with open-minded ears, this is a pretty darn interesting album. Quote
