desertblues Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I have a ten-lp box set on Montgomery Ward with one record each from Woody Herman, Kenton, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Dorsey and Prez Prado! It's called "The Golden Sounds Of The Big Bands" supposedly a limited edition series with absolutely no liner notes. I have not been able to find any info on this set, but I suspect the big department stores issued records to demonstrate their record players, and maybe as give-aways with a purchase. Atlantic pressed some lps as "for in-store demonstration only", I have one with Wilson Pickett and Sam and Dave. Quote

A friend once had a Sears copy of the early "Tom & Jerry" recordings by Simon & Garfunkel. Sears releases are appealingly cheesy ... but they just don't have the delightful sleaze factor that Tops records have. Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 It's not that surprising that Sears sold their own branded records given that they did sorta the same thing with cars (Kaiser Henry J's sold as Allstates) and motorcycles (Puch and Benelli, also sold as Allstate). I think the same goes for musical instruments, but I don't know who 'ghosted' for them... Quote

michel devos Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 This Sears LP looks like the Cd that was published in May 2002 by Empire Music(?).Jimmy is part of the Don Gardner and the Sonotones. Al Cass plays tenor sax and Gardner is the drummer and provides some vocals as well.Probably recorded around 1955. No serious reason why this session was not left resting in peace... Quote

Oh yes you are right...my mistake....it was indeed in 1953 he joined the Moore's Craftsmen before leaving in 55 for the SilverGoldstones under the direction of Alan Buescher.... yeeah, looks like it is time I seriously reread the sears catalog...
