Guest Chaney
I'm just wondering what music you might have recently purchased that didn't make the cut. You bought it, gave it a listen, another... and then maybe another and realized that it just wasn't to be. Time to find that reject a new home. Currently on my bottom shelf: Regeneration (Soul Note 121054-2) Rudd / Lacy / Mengelberg / Carter / Bennink ---> On its way to a new home. The Remote Viewers (Leo Lab CD 049) ---> On its way to a new home. Collective 4tet: Live at Crescent (Leo Lab CD 043) Geisser / Hennen / Hoyer / Parker ---> On its way to a new home. Reaching (Leo Lab CD 062) Steve Lantner / Mat Maneri Circadianaa: CLANGORI (Leo Lab CD 045) Trio Nueva Finlandia: HA! What's Going On? (Leo Lab CD 046) Paakkunainen / Ojanen / Hauta-aho Edited November 30, 2004 by Chaney
Matthew
Hemophiliac: John Zorn/Mike Patton/Ikue Mori. I couldn't get rid of this one fast enough!
jlhoots
It's all that squeakin' & squawkin' except for Regeneration. I couldn't get into the Simone Guiducci CD I bought (Gramelot). Not sure why, but it just didn't work for me.
GloriousBlues
Stephen Chopek & Chris Lovejoy - Brain Trust A couple years ago I saw these two guys playing percussion for Charlie Hunter. They nearly stole the show. I thought this CD would be fun, even though it's almost entirely percussion. Well it's not fun. There isn't enough rhymic activity to make up for the lack of melody & harmony. I haven't been able to get through the whole disc yet. Jazzmoose
I've been turned on to some interesting new music by sneaking in and reading the Funny Rat thread, but Duos for Doris by Rowe and Tilbury was not one of them. Hey, minimalism can be interesting, but Glass already did the "take it to an absurd level" schtick...
Guest Chaney
I hear you, Mark. I'm a patient man but my copy of Duos For Doris may soon be taking a hike.
vibes
Gary McFarland - Soft Samba Saw a few enthusiastic reviews for this album on this board, and since I've liked other things I've heard by him, I ordered a Japanese CD pressing. Quite possibly the biggest CD purchase mistake I've ever made. Syrupy arrangements, annoying humming, and not a single exciting thing happens. 7/4
The Creator Has a Master Plan - Pharoah Sanders Quite a disapointment!
SGUD missile
If anyone out there still has a vinyl LP by the Baird Hersey Big band called "Year of the Ear" ...destroy it immediately before it infects your collection! This is possibly the WORST ROTTEN ASS PUTRID UGLY big band side ever made !!! ...bar none !!! ( IMO , of course ) One listening could cause severe tinnitus ..no shit! Fortunately, I don't think this musical gomer was ever re-released on CD, ..
Nate Dorward
Well, I have conflicted feelings about Duos for Doris but it's worth persisting with. The hype surrounding it upon release--indeed, before it was released (one critic was picking it for "best of the year" in February 2003!)--was offputting & my first reaction was disappointment on actually hearing it, but it's worth trying to listen to it closely without the distractions of expectation & peer pressure. I think the biggest dud I picked up lately (i.e. bought, rather than received for review) was Archie Shepp's Live in San Francisco.
Guest Chaney
A fellow member suggested that I give away my rejects which I thought a good idea. Anyone who has any interest in my ugly babies, send me a PM and I'll send one or all along to you. (I will send the CDs and artwork and retain the jewel cases. I'll also have to ask recipients outside the USA to foot the cost for shipping.)

PHILLYQ
[Collective 4tet: Live at Crescent (Leo Lab CD 043) Geisser / Hennen / Hoyer / Parker : I bought that one, listened to it twice(Sometimes I'm just too forgiving) and then was glad I got it on sale for $3.99. David Ayers
Regeneration (Soul Note 121054-2) Rudd / Lacy / Mengelberg / Carter / Bennink ---> On its way to a new home. Collective 4tet: Live at Crescent (Leo Lab CD 043) Geisser / Hennen / Hoyer / Parker Well, though I admit I am too familiar with it to feel thrilled any more, I'm surprised you didn't get much out of Regeneration. As for the Collective Quartet, it's true I sold my copy as part of my rationalisation program, but in effect this is a NY Art Quartet tribute group and IMO has its good points. Worth a try, unlike many other Leo's which are totally skippable.
7/4
john zorn - hockey (horrible!) note to 7/4 - try the sanders again, i really liked it! B-) I'm spinning it now. And I like it better. Still not what I expected for disc titled The Creator Has A Master Plan. I'm not too sure the master plan is standards, but Pharoah gets paid and has a calling card to get paid playing standards instead of some younger cat, so I guess it's ok. RDK
Some of those Leo Lab titles are dreadful IMO - $3.99 is too much. I've got a stack of them. I've got a bunch of Leo discs - mostly Braxton and Sun Ra - but don't think I've heard any of the "Lab" discs. What's their m.o.? I would assume a-g, but to be honest I sometimes have a difficult time telling the "good" a-g from the "bad." What exactly does "dreadful" mean in this case? J.A.W.
I'm thinking about getting rid of a large part of my avant-garde/free/improv collection; I'm totally fed up with a lot of the albums.
DrJ
Although most seem to be talkin' about avant garde stuff, the thread title looked more inclusive, so: Teddy Edwards - MISSISSIPPI LAD (Gitanes/Verve). AT least for now. I've tried 5 or 6 times to like it, given how much I usually like Edwards, but this still seems putrid to me right now. Tom Waits = overrated and most definitely OUT OF PLACE in this company. This is really saying something for me, I can only recall ever CONSIDERING selling back 1 or 2 jazz recordings EVER - but I'm thinkin' about it with this one. I guess they were too avant for me.
