They nearly stole the show. I thought this CD would be fun, even though it's almost entirely percussion. Well it's not fun. There isn't enough rhymic activity to make up for the lack of melody & harmony. I haven't been able to get through the whole disc yet. Quite possibly the biggest CD purchase mistake I've ever made. Syrupy arrangements, annoying humming, and not a single exciting thing happens. This is possibly the WORST ROTTEN ASS PUTRID UGLY big band side ever made !!! ...bar none !!! ( IMO , of course ) One listening could cause severe tinnitus ..no shit! The hype surrounding it upon release--indeed, before it was released (one critic was picking it for "best of the year" in February 2003!)--was offputting & my first reaction was disappointment on actually hearing it, but it's worth trying to listen to it closely without the distractions of expectation & peer pressure. As for the Collective Quartet, it's true I sold my copy as part of my rationalisation program, but in effect this is a NY Art Quartet tribute group and IMO has its good points. And I like it better. Still not what I expected for disc titled The Creator Has A Master Plan. I'm not too sure the master plan is standards, but Pharoah gets paid and has a calling card to get paid playing standards instead of some younger cat, so I guess it's ok. AT least for now. I've tried 5 or 6 times to like it, given how much I usually like Edwards, but this still seems putrid to me right now. Tom Waits = overrated and most definitely OUT OF PLACE in this company. This is really saying something for me, I can only recall ever CONSIDERING selling back 1 or 2 jazz recordings EVER - but I'm thinkin' about it with this one. I like a lot of avant jazz, but those Leo Lab discs just don't hold together for me. Even with repeated listenings, it seemed as if there was nothing for me to get into.
