Other May 25 Fantasy reissues by Harold Mabern and Shirley Scott- any comments on these? - I have not heard them yet. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 An awful lot of Fantasy's funky material is out on cd. . . check out their "Legends of Acid Jazz" series for example. Man oh man I'm really enjoying the James Moody "And the Brass Figures" recent reissue! Quote
Eric Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 I picked up the Harold Mabern. It combines two of his sessions with George Coleman - one also has Blue Mitchell and the other has Buddy Tate. I had both of these on scratchy lps and was happy to get the "perfect sound forever" version. Sound quality aside though, these are nice sessions. A couple of boogaloos (which aren't all that annoying) and some real nice swinging, bluesy jazz. Both Coleman and Tate sound great. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 That's true, I forgot I have those Mabern lps as well. Mitchell sounds good too! Quote
Brad Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 I'm waiting for the Johnny Hammond Smith, the Mabern and the Mance. CD Universe seems to be out of the Shirley Scott (darn!). The Johnny Smith from last summer was really soulfully spectacular. Quote

But I don't think they recorded together. Guess you mean Buddy Terry Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 What's the Shirley Scott release? Damn, more organ records to buy. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 It's a combo of two nice trio records, "Shirely's Sounds" and "Great Scott!" " Quote
