Is KH1958 still around? He wrote a comment in this forum back in September about James Szantor from Down Beat mag being "a moron". I e-mailed him to ask a couple of questions and have had no response. James Szantor is my father and he is, by no means, a moron. He is undoubtedly the opposite. He may view things differently than other people but he's entitled too, right? Him and I have had discussions about this incident and there are a lot of unknowns to most. He has seen all of the "back stage" antics that go on. He viewed the show as a professional, not as a concertgoer. Concertgoers tend to be more forgiving because of all of the emotion of the ambience. If you can cut through the emotions and see what actually happened, you may take a different view on things. He had spoken to other players that were there and received the same opinions. Anyway, thought I would share my side a bit. Take care everyone!

kh is still around I believe.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this. Most of us are fans and only have the articles and the music to go by. I myself am a HUGE admirer of the Kirk performance in question, as you may have gathered from my posts above. I believe I called your father an "ass." That's not nice, but it is an expression of my emotional reaction to the music I like so much being "dissed" as something that should have not happened. I hope you can understand that.

Feel free to hang around this board if you like. The more, the merrier! :tup

Let me say as a father you just have to love this post. For all who just love the music you still have to love this post. This is what the Board is all about and while the choice of words may stray at times, the opinions should not. Everyone has a pesonal frame of reference. Let's admit that we love to read the critics if for no other reason than to disagree with them! Sometimes quite vociferously and with great emotion. :g:g

Nonetheless, I welcome egirlsguy and hope he/she will continue to post here. The varying opinions have prompted me to check out an artist on more than one occasion, just to find out for myself who I agreed with. Critics serve a vital role in the love of this music ( or any art form for that matter ) and I am glad that members on this board are secure enough to feel free to post their true opinions here.

This is a win, win for this board, even if a better choice of words may have been in order.

Thanks for the post egirlsguy and welcome.

Well, this raises the issue of how much "insider info" is relevant to the public at llarge. It's a complicated matter, to put it mildly - do you want to know all the "preliminaries" that led up to a certain peformance, or do you just want to know the performance itself? And should you let some true but "unfavorable" information about the preliminaries color your perceptions of the actual thing itself?

Having observed and participated in some "preliminaries" myself, I say "proceed with caution", fully keeping in mind Jack Nicholson's immortal line in "A Few Good Men". A LOT of illusions can easily be shattered...

Exceptions, of course, abound.

Regarding I, Eye, Aye, it's worth it just for the blazing ten-minute version of "Volunteered Slavery"--those cats cut a groove as deep as the Grand Canyon.

But then come that magic moment where Kirk lashes out and plays this one thing that makes me go completely nuts and jump up and march the room just because I'm incapable to contain my joy/astonishment about the sheer beauty of it all.

Exactly--see the above track :) Rahsaan was uneven, to say the least, but his musical personality was so huge that even his mediocre stuff glowed. And when he was really on, he was like some kind of musical supernova. Bright moments, indeed :tup

Excellent point Jim. Are you suggesting "we can't handle the truth"? Information is one thing; knowledge, wisdom, understanding and forgiveness are something else.

The interesting thing about many of these performances is the fact that they are now historical events. And like historical events, they take on deeper and at times different meaning when all the facts are known......

Depends on how much you want to know, and why. And what you believe in the first place. :g

And to be sure, I don't know anywhere near all the truth, just enough to know that there's usually more than meets the eye more often than not. ;)
