For a while I didn't listen to rock anymore, but now I'd have to say it's a virtual tie between blues, r&b, classical, pop/rock, country and others. So, other than jazz (which still takes up most of my listening time) I'd have to say...."miscellaneous."

I voted classical. I like very much the music from the baroque era and specially the music of JS Bach.

The greatest musician ever:

Other than jazz, it's mostly Brazilian-and mostly Bossa, although even within my passion for Jobim, there's a great deal of material that's really not Bossa, and sometimes borders on classical. I still haven't really completely opened up to "classical" in general. That's a big category, though, obviously, and I do enjoy a taste now and then. I feel burned out on rock (haven't really enjoyed it for over 20 years now), and I went through a serious blues phase in the 70's, and really only care for it now in small doses. Like Tony C, I also go for some vintage pop, even some things that some would label "easy listening". :o Old soundtracks (Rodgers & Hammerstein, Bernstein, Frank Loesser, etc), pop vocalists... some of the stuff that transports me back to my youth (pre-Beatles invasion).

As I was reminded in the current blindfold test, the area that I've neglected but want to get back into at some point is vintage R&B (pre-"soul", that is).

Lately, I've been listening a lot to Armenian, Greek, West-African and Israeli music. I guess that's considered to be "World music".

So, I voted Folk/World, eventhough I really don't like the term "World Music". I find it condescending - pulling together whatever music that is not of an Anglo-American descent.

The termn "world music" was invented in the 80's to designate a new style based on traditional music from various continents.

But already in the late 60's, the german jazz author Joachim Ernst Behrendt organized sessions between jazz artists and traditional musicians that would also qualify for this label. One session was called "Jazz meets the world".

I'm with you, although to me the most annoying aspect is the vagueness that results from terms like this. What the hell are you supposed to say when someone asks "Do you like World Music"? Not as weird as the term "New Age", though. ^_^

I guess alternative is my next preferred genre (whatever that is these days) as I'm really digging the new(ish) Cardigans CD that came out yesterday in the states (and almost 1 year ago everywhere else). Also, digging the sounds of The Rasmus, The Stills and The Killers. I think some of it harkens back to the New Wave of the 80s. And since I still listen to Adam & the Ants and Flock of Seagulls frequently, that sits quite well with me...

I also still dig some of the heavier shit I listened to before discovering Jazz (Fear Factory, Sepultura, Slayer, etc). I'll never get sick of that stuff - I can see me at 50+ and down front in the pit - yeah!!!!
