John L Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I am REALLY surprised at how many people are listing Benny Carter's Cosmopollite as among the few most essential small group swing albums. Maybe I shouldn't have sold my copy after all? Quote
LAL Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 The list goes on... Django Reinhardt & The Quintet of the Hot Club of France. The JSP Volume 1 box is a great place to start. Quote
BruceH Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Benny Goodman--The Complete RCA Victor Small Group Recordings Another vote for the Verve Benny Carter small group stuff (3,4,5 etc.) AND "Further Definitions"---you simply can't go wrong! Quote
LAL Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Charlie Christian Genius of the Electric Guitar box set. Quote

neveronfriday Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Based on reviews and comments here and after looking around for some as-new used copies for next to nothing, I bought myself: 01) Ben Webster. The Soul of Ben Webster. Verve 1995 (2-CD). 02) Benny Carter. Further definitions. MCA/GRP/Impulse 1997. Both are damn fine releases. I've been running them for two days, on and off, and I can add my recommendation here as well. You can't go wrong with these! Cheers! Quote
Christiern Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 Somebody has probably mentioned these before, but, just in case, you can't go wrong with the Lionel Hampton small group Victor sessions. He left few swing musicians out--there's even Dizzy Gillespie, sounding very much like Eldridge. Quote
