Played the first three dates of the Hill Mosaic again over the last few days (plus "Spiral") - great music! Looking forward to continue with "Point of Departure" tonight!

Just finished disc 2... still a bit disappointing.... :(:(

Jazz Crusaders - Disc 1...

I'm finding this a little disappointing.... Hope it gets better....

I listened to the clips on the Mosaic site the other day and I wasn't impressed. Lift music as far as I could tell. Perhaps their live session might be a better place to start.

Right now ....Disc 7 Chu Berry.. Very nice set, the Calloway material is significantly better than expected but pales by comparison to the material with Fletcher Henderson.

Transfers are very clean but perhaps could do with a little more top end. I compared "I hope Gabriel ..." from the Gene Krupa session with the transfers of the wonderful Hep discs "Hecklers Hop" issued under Roy Eldridge's name. The Mosaic transfers were in every way better, less surface noise, les distortion, , instruments more full bodied and a greater sense of space. The Heps don't sound bad but the Mosaic transfers are superior.

I'm a big fan of the Jazz Crusaders but the live albums are their best work by a long chalk.

The Jazz Crusaders disc 1 (so far) I'm thinking of doing a compilation disc for my buddies who aren't really jazz fans but love the Crusaders circa '74-'75.
