Cliff Englewood Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Listened to all 3 discs of this last night; A truly excellent set, almost perfect, I just can't get into "Nixon, Dixon And Yates Blues" though. It's the only stinker IMHO. Quote

MG Yes, listened to it this morning. Those Transition sides are very nice; just like a mid-fifties Prestige jam session without Gene Ammons. And the blues at the end is one I love. Pepper Adams is very beguiling and Trane is at his funkiest. Glad I played it. MG Quote

Hey Ron and Mag Goldberg - Have you picked this set up, yet??? Duke Ellington Complete 36-40 Variety, Vocalion and Okeh Small Group Sessions Disc#4 I probably should think of it, but I've got a lot of other priorities, including getting a huge bunch of African stuff later in the spring. At present, I'm cutting down in preparation for that splurge. MG Quote

Duke Ellington Complete 36-40 Variety, Vocalion and Okeh Small Group Sessions Disc#4 It's definitely on my list for some point in the future. In the interim, I still have the 2 Columbia "Duke's Men" doubles--containing a lot of these tracks--to tide me over. Quote

Ron S Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Eh, Ron??? sorry to go off topic but that ones beyond me, but in fairness, most things are. He means me. I turned him (and the rest of the Board) onto a great deal for this set (Universal edition) a couple of years ago, and now he's eternally indebted to me. Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Funnily enough, I bought mine, also a Universal edition, in Tower before Christmas for €60, so does this mean I am indirectly eternally indebted to you as well??? Even with the dodgy Disc 6, it was still a bargin. Quote

Even with the dodgy Disc 6, it was still a bargin. FWIW, a lot of the Universal sets (including mine) don't have the problem with disc 6. You might want to see about getting it replaced. And no, only tranemonk is eternally indebted to me (at least in his mind). Quote

Parkertown Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Jazz Crusaders set. This is just real nice...right up my alley...post hard-bop. And last nite: Miles' 5-tet 1965-68 10 Lp set. These two and the Turrentine Mosaic were Valentine's Day gifts from my incredible, beautiful wife. Quote
Parkertown Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 (edited) The Crusader's music is all new to me. Except for what I've heard on the that 2-Lp Mid 70's Blue Note Reissue Series Lp I've got. That was a mix of live and studio dates. I picked that up a couple months ago and once I heard it, I knew they were a group I wanted to hear more of. Edited February 17, 2007 by Parkertown Quote
