I'm listening to a CD entitled Driftin' Blues - The Best of Charles Brown, which is taken from his Aladdin recordings.

The Mosaic box of Aladdins was five CDs, which is probably more of Charles Brown than I would want; but sometimes I'm sorry I didn't get it.

OKay.... I also have it... but I'm trying to get through the Buddy Rich set... (which I'm really liking...despite all the furor when it was announced..) Excellent review.... You're raising my eagerness.... :excited::excited::excited:

I've had mine for about a week now but I've only managed to play it right through once.

First impressions are:

1) it is up to Mosaic's usual high standards for presentation and sound quality.

2) Of his own recordings I seem to prefer the two earliest dates - Full Nelson (Verve) & Fantabulous (Argo). Perhaps that's because they are the ones where he actually plays alto/tenor sax instead of just conducting/arranging.

3) The Kennedy Dream (Impulse) sounds so much better than my original vinyl that it could be a different recording!

4) I don't think the Shirley Scott album - Roll-em (Impulse) is going to grow on me

5) The Pee Wee Russell album - The spirit of '76 (Impulse) is lovely. I have never heard him play before, having always associated his clarinet playing with Dixieland Jazz which I'm not keen on. However his playing with the big band is absolutely stunning and has meant that I will be investigating other recordings of his.

5) There is probably too much Jimmy Smith in the set but it does sound so very good, if perhaps a little too familiar.

If you like other of his albums or you just want to upgrade existing vinyl then I don't think you will be disappointed with the set

So Free For All, what do you (and others who have it) think of it? Eagerly awaiting a report.

Thanks for posting some impressions - I will not get this right now, but it sounds good enough to be added to the list...

As for Pee Wee, continue here (and get it before it's too late!):

Fantastic quartet album with Laurence Brown (plus a bass/drums team, no piano), and among others, they do some Monk songs!

That Pee Wee Impulse has MARSHALL not Lawrence Brown.

It's good but my favorite Pee Wee is earlier Pee Wee, especially in Condonite settings. What a musical mind! My favorite clarinetist. (I guess people have an aversion to Chicago style, "dixieland" etc. but I love that stuff when done right).

Carmell Jones - Mosaic Select, disc 2

Business Meetin' and Brass Bag sessions - w/ Harold Land, Frank Strazzeri. Gerald Wilson arrangements.

I haven't listened to this one in awhile -- I had forgotten how *really good* it is.

I will miss you Jackie Mac... :(:(:(:(:(:(:( RIP

this was the 1st Mosaic I ever bought... Makes it even more sad somehow.

I am also spinning this set.

It wasn't my first set (Mingus Candid), but I remember buying it and telling EVERYONE I ran into that they had to buy it.

Based on the last chance discussions, I'm visiting an old friend -- the J.J. Johnson set starting with Disc 4.

Had it for years but it's one of my favorites!! :tup:tup:tup:tup:tup
