GA Russell Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 (edited) I'm listening to the Pacific Jazz CD Trio, which combines a Russ Freeman 1953 date and a Richard Twardzik 1954 date. I believe that the Freeman date was recorded the same day as (and following) the trio's backing Chet Baker. In college I had the Twardzik date on an LP entitled The Last Set. I found it in a trash can! I had never heard of him before, but I retrieved it to give it a listen, and never threw it away. Anyway, I believe that both of these are included in the Pacific Jazz Trios Mosaic Select. (edit for typo) Edited January 16, 2006 by GA Russell Quote
sidewinder Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 and judging by those 1961 dates quite astonishing that Byrd (still/always?) had such a relatively bad reputation. I can never work that one out either ! Just the other day lstening to 'Fuego' vinyl I was pondering this very issue. Maybe future generations will be more sympathetic. That 'Byrd/Adams' set is a beauty. Quote

That 'Byrd/Adams' set is a beauty. Well, you may remember that I consider "Fuego" ok, but not great... I don't find it nearly as compelling as the 1961 dates, to be honest (same for "Byrd in Flight"). Then "Free Form" for me again has a very special vibe. And even though them Penguin moldy figs (haha!) don't like the with Voices albums, that one is a great album to my ears, too! Quote
