I finally broke down and ordered this as well - it came on Monday. So far I've only listened to disc 1, which included the magnificent Hawkins extended "Body and Soul" and the delightful Hampton jam session with Herschel Evans and Charlie Shavers. Looking forward to more gems in the coming days! Quote

They alone are worth the buy! 27 minutes ago, Stereojack said: Looking forward to more gems in the coming days! Besides the Basie sides, my favourites are the Teddy Wilson big band tracks. The Glen Miller band swings much harder than in the studio. Quote
Bob_Bobson Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 I've been on quite a buying tear of late with some great additions, but I was very happy to finally score a NM copy of this long-sought gem: Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 8, 2020 Report Posted December 8, 2020 Playing some Jimmy Smith on the show this afternoon in honor of his birthday, so revisiting this set for the first time in many years: Quote

But I'm now with this: I stumbled about a thread about this box from 2017 or 18 (when it was about to come out) and picked it up. And I'm enjoying it immensely. What I like most are his solos, but his orchestra is also great, with at times Roy Eldridge, Ben Webster and Cozy Cole, or Goodman, Lionel Hampton and Gene Krupa, or his interventions with singers, such as Ella Fitzgerald. OliverM Posted December 14, 2020 Report Posted December 14, 2020 Just bought this from over the Channel, LP box. It's quite wonderful. Quote

Bluesnik Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 This is one of my favorite Selects. And there is a terrific album in it, The Street Swingers, with Jim Hall and Jimmy Raney. Quote
