Peter Friedman Posted July 15, 2019 Report Posted July 15, 2019 Have been slowly working my way through the Sonny Stitt set. Quote
David Ayers Posted July 16, 2019 Report Posted July 16, 2019 Working through the Giuffre from start to finish. Although the box booklet and inserts turned to dust in the sunlight. Disks play fine. Quote

It was fun revisitng the music and I especially enjoyed the Ralph Sutton, Joe Sullivan and very familiar Art Tatum tracks, the latter also which appeared on the LP and CD Piano Starts Here. The Ralph Sutton recordings are really fine, aren't they... I think Sutton's one of the great under-recognized jazz pianists. Quote

Jim Duckworth Posted July 20, 2019 Report Posted July 20, 2019 (edited) I've enjoyed this set for years, but a friend whose opinion I trust waved me off the last disc, citing bad pop covers as the reason. In investigating Bobby Hutcherson and Harold Land, I had cause to open and listen to the final disc in the set, and yes on disc 4 is a cover of Sunshine of Your Love and disc 5 does feature Aquarius, but these are not dealbreakers for me. The version of Equinox on disc 5 kills. Edited July 20, 2019 by Jim Duckworth Quote

The development of the quintet over the years covered by this set is remarkable. On the last session (July 1963) Shearing as modern a pianist as anybody else that year. Quote
gmonahan Posted August 14, 2019 Report Posted August 14, 2019 Disc IV. Enjoying me some Dizzy Reece Quote
Justin V Posted August 21, 2019 Report Posted August 21, 2019 Disc 1. I won an incomplete set on eBay (no box, minus Disc 3) for less than $17 after shipping. This has been a set that I have been curious about and it was a price that I couldn't pass up. Quote
Bob_Bobson Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 Discovered this on Spotify and am in a big band mood these days so gave it a listen. Surprised how solid the whole set is start to finish. Superb musicians and a massive ensemble sound. Quote
