six string Posted January 17, 2013 Report Posted January 17, 2013 The Complete Blue NOte Recordings of Thelonious Monk. (lps) I just picked up a near mint copy for $100 which isn't a steal exactly but I've never had the opportunity to buy one in any condition so I jumped on it even though I have most of it on those RVG remasters. It sounds better to my ears too though I'd chalk that up to my turntable vs. my cd player. Quote
king ubu Posted January 22, 2013 Report Posted January 22, 2013 disc one, but I guess I'll just go right through it all! Quote

king ubu Posted January 22, 2013 Report Posted January 22, 2013 It's a nice one. They could have added another album (Cohn's "Mr. Music", but then it has only Newman and not Green). While there's some sameness, there's plenty of nice stuff going on, mainly by Cohn and Newman of course, but trombonists Frank Rehak and Urbie Green have their spots, too, and Henry Coker (on the Green album only, alas) made my head turn several times ... also Gene Quill on Cohn's "Jazz Workshop" album, which closes the set (and I think is it's highlight). Not essential stuff by any stretch, not even very good all the way through - but enjoyable, Basie-inspired, swinging small group jazz. Quote

It's solid and won't disappoint but won't set the hills on fire either. But then that was never its intention Quote
