I ended up spending the night with this whole set yesterday. What a great one! It seems to be rarely mentioned among people's favorite Mosaics, but it just shot way up on my list. Just good old fashioned fun. John Hardee is just a fine Texas Tenorman, and Ike Quebec gives no surprisese playing with some smokin' rhythm sections with Milt Hinton. Cuscuna and Morgenstern put a hell of a booklet together, too. It ranks up at the top with the Max Harrison booklet for the Albert Ammons/Meade Lux Lewis box and Larry Kart's Tristano/Konitz/Marsh box. Great stuff. This material was out on cd in Japan, and in fact one of the lps sounds much better in the Japanese cd version than on the Mosaic.
