Clunky Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 Roy Eldridge- disc 7-( this was still sealed until a few minutes ago - bought the set 3 yrs ago !!!!) lovely session with strings, pales after more than a few tracks ,the following session with Ronnie Ball is effortless swing. Lovely, great sound. Quote

AllenLowe Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 wait, that makes no sense - if you are only listening to discs 5 and 6 than it's the partial HRS sessions - to listen to the complete you would need multiple cd players - am I the only guy around here who's paying attention? This has happened before - Quote
Ron S Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 Allen, I would try to explain it to you, but it involves quantum mechanics, existentialism, and a working knowledge of ancient Sumerian gerunds. I don't think you're quite up to it. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 got ya - I've always had problems with the Sumerian language - ever since I translated all those Dead Sea Scrolls into Pig Latin - Quote

king ubu Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Quincy Jones ABC/Mercury Big Band Jazz Sessions, CD2. Living up completely to expectations. Glad you snagged that copy! It's fine music - there seems to be a bias (with reason I guess) against Q on this board, but regardless of all the debates, the music on this set is great! Quote

It's fine music - there seems to be a bias (with reason I guess) against Q on this board, but regardless of all the debates, the music on this set is great! The thing to bear in mind with the 'Q' Mosaic is that I think his key role here is as driving force/organiser and not necessarily as arranger. There's mighty fine stuff from Bill Byers, Benny Golson and Bill Potts for example on this set and pretty well a who's who of top early 60s soloists. Great set ! Two arrivals today ordered 10 days apart both appeared on my doormat today Bud Shank/Bob Cooper Select discs 2 and 3... material with strings exceeds expectations significantly, Duke Pearson Select disc 1.....ordered 3 days ago (sent by surface option)- arrived today !!!- so far very nice Whoah ! The very same titles have just been delivered from Mosaic 'chez moi'. Uncanny ! Quote

BillF Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 (edited) The thing to bear in mind with the 'Q' Mosaic is that I think his key role here is as driving force/organiser and not necessarily as arranger. So that explains how the Impulse CD of Quincy Jones's This Is How I Feel About Jazz includes 6 tracks by West Coast saxophonists where the only Q link is that he is named as producer. sidewinder Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) Duke Pearson Mosaic Select, CD3. Nice ! Really like Duke P's interpretations of the Xmas classics on 'Merry Ole Soul'. Not like me to play Xmas music in September , I think it's going to get lots of airplay during the Xmas Season this year. Edited September 25, 2009 by sidewinder Quote
Clunky Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Duke Pearson Mosaic Select, CD2. Nice ! Really like Duke P's interpretations of the Xmas classics on 'Merry Ole Soul'. Not like me to play Xmas music in September , I think it's going to get lots of airplay during the Xmas Season this year. the Xmas selections are a lot tougher than I expected, certainly not trite interpretations by any standard, I haven't listened to them thoroughly , saving that for xmas itself. Currently listening to Dizzy Gillespie Disc 6, universal edition, unusually for Mosaic the CD tray insert has track/personnel listings that are all wrong and belong to Discs 3&4 rather than 5&6.
