sidewinder Posted January 16, 2023 Report Posted January 16, 2023 An afternoon of Mosaics, whilst reading Larry Kart’s book. CD5, ‘Merry Go Round’. Splendid stuff. By way of contrast, CD1 Quote

The other day I listened to Sonny Rollins' trio A Night at the Village Vanguard after reading about Elvin Jones in Mark Stryker's Jazz from Detroit. I wasn't even aware of him there. Edit: what Kart book is that? Edited January 17, 2023 by Bluesnik Quote

sidewinder Posted February 6, 2023 Report Posted February 6, 2023 Disk 7. The Joe Marsala tracks with Dizzy Gillespie are fascinating. Quote

Bluesnik Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 What a beauty of a set. And with lots of Joe Pass too (at least in the part where I'm now). Quote

Bluesnik Posted February 19, 2023 Report Posted February 19, 2023 (edited) Inspired by a thread here about it I decided to pick it up. And because I hadn't listened to it in a while. And what wonder again. Edit: this is a very good Select. One of the bests. And I just found out also the second, behind only the Moncur, which I adore. Edited February 19, 2023 by Bluesnik Quote
sidewinder Posted February 20, 2023 Report Posted February 20, 2023 Need to give the Carmell Select a spin.. This afternoon, leisurely working my way through CDs 8-10 of Basie Studio. Starting with Benny Carter’s fine arrangements for ‘Kansas City Suite’. Quote
gmonahan Posted February 22, 2023 Report Posted February 22, 2023 Listening to disc 5. Some great DeFranco on this disc! Quote

Stompin at the Savoy Posted March 4, 2023 Report Posted March 4, 2023 I finally found a nice copy of this at a very affordable price, completing my set of Basie Mosaics! Funny, when asked what music I was into I used to say Miles, Coltrane, Blue Note label etc. Now it's Basie and big band generally.
