Van Basten II Posted May 21, 2010 Report Posted May 21, 2010 Finishing the Quincy Jones acquired from the latest Mosaic sale, entertainment wise it rates an A. Quote
John Tapscott Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Just finished listening to the Curtis Amy set - enjoying it more with each listen, really glad I picked this one up. Quote

Woody Herman Select + Lester Young/Basie Set......  Any suggestions????? Quote
sidewinder Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 All 3 would be good but I like the sound of the Herman Select with Basie/Young combo. Quote
White Lightning Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 Oliver Nelson CDs 1 and 2. The music is sleek and more polished than I'm used to, but I love the music nonetheless Quote

tranemonk Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 I forgot to tell you that I caved in on that one a month ago.... Now it's between the Artie Shaw/Woody Herman & Herman Select + Young/Basie Louis Armstrong Decca. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 Okay and what do you think of the Armstrong? I've listened through the Shaw twice, and I've had a lot of that material on lp and cd. . . and I enjoy it but I'm not really crazy about it right now. The Young and Basie. . . wow, love this music, have for a few decades. Quote
tranemonk Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 Haven't gotten it yet.. (Had Mosaic hold it to ship with the Jamal set...) Guess you're not a fan of the Herman?? ((either the Select or the full box?) Okay and what do you think of the Armstrong? I've listened through the Shaw twice, and I've had a lot of that material on lp and cd. . . and I enjoy it but I'm not really crazy about it right now. The Young and Basie. . . wow, love this music, have for a few decades. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 I like both the Hermans. I don't enjoy either more or feel either is more essential to my collection as the Young. But you won't do wrong getting one of the Hermans. Quote

John Tapscott Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 (edited) Complete Capitol Recordings of Woody Herman - _disc 5.. Trying to decide what to spend my upcoming Fathers Day present (Mosaic Gift Certificate.. :excited: ) on... 1_ Columbia Woody Herman 2. Artie Shaw OR 3. Woody Herman Select + Lester Young/Basie Set......  Any suggestions????? I second those who say the WH Select and Young/Basie. (I presume you are choosing from one of the three and not the Herman Columbia and Shaw together). Nothing against the others (I don't have the Shaw), but what a great variety of great swinging music these 7 discs would give you. Edited June 8, 2010 by John Tapscott Quote
