Big Al Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Woo hoo!!! I've been hoping for this one for as long as I've been listening to jazz! Anyone heard this? It's got Philly Joe Jones, so it's GOT to be fiery, ya? Quote
John Tapscott Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 Well, its my favorite Evans recording. Desert island music for me. And yes, it is fiery for an Evans recording. IMHO Philly Joe was THE drummer for Evans. Quote
bebopbob Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Great set from the Vanguard but will all this music fit onto a single CD? I have this set which spans two LP records issued in the early 1980s. Great music-hopefully Universal/Verve will issue the entire set even if it means a two CD set. It seems that the LPR series consists of sets/records that are rather short in duration (30 to 45 minutes) with no additional tracks. Have there been any two CD sets issued in the LPR series? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 The AMG Review claims it's only 71 minutes of music (total), and suggests that it would be great to release on one CD. Quote
jlhoots Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I'm looking forward to this. I love Philly Joe on Everybody Digs Bill Evans. Quote
Eloe Omoe Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 The AMG Review claims it's only 71 minutes of music (total), and suggests that it would be great to release on one CD. I have the double LP, bought way back when. It's about 70 minutes long, so it should be one CD only. But I also have the Evans Complete Verve Box (the big rusty ones) which has 31 more tracks from that gig, all previously unissued. The complete output of those two nights (August 17 and 18, 1967), should cover three CDs. Luca Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Oh man, I hadn't realized we were talking about THOSE tracks. I've got the Verve box, and frankly -- since I've never owned many of the albums before (either on LP, or as single CD's), they all run together (in my mind), without any of the material having any identity as far as original albums go. But I gotta say that I LOVE those roughly three CD's worth of previously unreleased live tracks, smack dab in the middle of the Verve box. Frankly, the box is such a HUGE pain in the ass (packaging-wise), that I would seriously think about buying that very same material (again) if it were issued separately as a three-disc set. Hell, if I remember right (my Verve box is buried in another box, at the moment, or I'd check), if I remember right... The material from those three CD's worth of live music, is spread across something like FOUR discs. (Like the last half of one disc, two more full discs, and then the first half of a forth disc.) What a pain!! Man, I sure hope this turns out to be a release of the complete material, 3 CD's. What are the odds?? (Probably 50/50, at best, is my guess.) Quote

Big Al Posted May 26, 2004 Author Report Posted May 26, 2004 I’d guess that it’s just gonna be a straight reissue of the LP, as none of the previous LPRs have bonus tracks on them. I would hope that Verve, in its infinite wisdom, doesn’t spread this over two CDs. Quote
Shrdlu Posted May 29, 2004 Report Posted May 29, 2004 It's all very good stuff. Bill said that Philly Joe was his favorite drummer, which would have shocked my friends in the early 70s who listened so much to the trio with La Faro and Motian and made scornful remarks about Philly Joe's drumming on the "Interplay" LP. I must admit that I was surprised to read that. I love Philly Joe's work on countless hard bop sessions, but never thought of him as a Bill Evans Trio type. (Bear in mind that, back then, most of Bill's records that were released did not feature Philly Joe.) But we must go with what Bill, himself, said. Quote
Brad Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Up, since this is coming out today and I'm picking it up at lunchtime. Quote
bertrand Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 What else is coming out today? Bertrand. Quote
bebopbob Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Just ordered it on CD Universe for $8.39 - still cheaper than the $11.98 list even after postage. Hopefully I'll have it by the weekend. Quote
Brad Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 What else is coming out today? Bertrand. This is great and I guess fiery for a Bill Evans session, who plays it kind of straight. A very cool Green Dolphin Stree Other coming out today are Jimmy Smith's The Boss, Ahmad Jamal's Chamber Music for the New Jazz, both of which I picked up, plus a Ramsey Lewis title plus Oscar Peterson doing Frank Sinatra, both of which I passed on. Brad Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 While I liked the US issue, if you can get the complete session put out in Japan: 4 discs recorded over 2 days and definitely worth it. Hiroshi can obtain this. Quote

Brad Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 I'm not sure how much I paid for it but if you email him at hiroshi@earlyrecords.com he can tell you. Everything that is in the Verve box is probably in there so if you have that abomination you probably don't need these. Quote
wesbed Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Damn. I purchased the CALIFORNIA HERE I COME title about a year ago. The disk remains, still, unopened on a shelf near my bed. What's my problem? Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Thanks to you ba$tards, I bought this damn CD tonight. Wow. Thanks, you bastards...these sides kick some ass. Nicely recorded, as well! Wes, rip off that shrink wrap, man--a treat is in store! Quote

Nicely recorded, as well! Wes, rip off that shrink wrap, man--a treat is in store! ← Don't worry, you won't regret it. Philly Joe brought something to the table different than many of the drummers who played with Bill. He apparently lit some kind of fire, because when anyone pulls out that tired line that "Evans didn't swing" I usually direct them to something with Philly Joe. I love the LaFaro/Motian stuff, no question about that, but there's a different Bill that surfaces when PJJ is at the helm IMHO. This is a definite HELL YEAH! Quote
wesbed Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Philly Joe is one of my favorite drummers, with anybody. Philly Joe is very good at creating a spark within the piano playing of Bill Evans. Quote
