LarryCurleyMoe Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Anybody have the lowdown? The "temporary" closing looks permanent... I like Organissimo forum better anyway! BTW - Blue Note unleashes another "chicky" singer - "Kerren Ann"...is she "any good?"... Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 I know Blue Note launched one in Europe. Not sure of the wen address. It may be bluenoteeurope.com. I think someone once mentioned it here. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Keren Ann. . . well she sounds not unlike a Euro Norah from what I can hear. Might be interesting. . . Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Here may now be the only Blue Note board "in town": http://www.bluenoteeurope.com/mb/ Quote

jazzbo Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 Hard to say. . . Keren Allen seems to already have at least two successful cds out. Quote
Dave James Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 I wonder if someone like Tom Evered ever laments the fate of the late BNBB. Just from the standpoint of hosting the board, they would seem to have had gained so much in terms of differentiating their brand from everyone else. Not to mention the advertising / promotional bump from having so many people pass through their site to get to the board. They essentially told everyone who had been so loyal for so long to go fuck themselves. I didn't understand it then and I don't understand it now, but they lost something that's irretrievable in the process. Much is the pity. By the way, the BNBB-E is a total waste of time. Up over and out. Quote
DrJ Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I've gone back and forth about my feelings on the BNBB closing...on one hand I was just as indignant as many, but on the other, it is a business they are running, and the board was ultimately pretty peripheral to that. Sure, you can argue this point a bit and say that the BNBB was a great way for them to maintain a finger on the pulse of the jazz diehards, but honestly many Organissimo contributors still e-mail Cuscuna et al to give them feedback anyway, so I'm not sure they really lost anything ultimately. So what I feel with hindsight is that they certainly could have been a little less abrupt about how they did it, a little kinder, but I can't blame them one bit and actually think the Organissimo board is superior in many ways, not least of which because it's a grass roots kind of movement without a big corporate angle. Ditto By the way, I noticed the other day that the link to the Bulletin Board from the BN home page has been removed. May it rest in peace. Onward and upward. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 03/03/03, the day of doom at the BNBB. I still have darkly humorous memories of the board's last gasps after that, with posters running amok around the new censorship software (which wouldn't allow you to type "Jew"--thereby offending mightily, and with good reason, many of the Jewish posters), and Greg's last-man-standing proclamations... While I'll always be grateful to the old BNBB for giving me a gateway into the online jazz community, this place beats it hands down. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I have great memories of the place, as it led to this place. And I know that some still miss it greatly and have a reverential feeling that no other site can replace. But in all honesty, looking back with the distance I now have from it, those last few weeks there were absolutely hilarious... Quote
wesbed Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I don't miss the BNBB. I much prefer Organissimo and would have a difficult time going back to the BNBB if it were resurrected. However, I do wish we had all the history found in the various BNBB threads. For example, you could do a search on nearly any RVG, at the BNBB, and find threads discussing that RVG. The RVG threads were all there, on the BNBB, and were created as each RVG was released. The same thing is happening at Organissimo, slowly, as the new RVGs are released. Unfortunately, the older RVGs don't get as much coverage (they've already been discussed at the BNBB). Quote

I hung out there longer than most, so GOM's description of posters running amok has me laughing as I type the words. Greg was taking on all comers, swinging with both fists as the stern slipped below the surface. What a study in human nature. It was tough to see a community of which I was a part for some 5 years circle the drain. The whole thing was public relations disaster. But the end result is that thanks to Jim, the very best of that bulletin board lives here. A stroll down memory lane (From the BNBB): Originally posted by Tomatbluenote: Quote And we really owed no one a warning on this. To be frank, it is our board and we needed to act decisively without opening a Pandora's box of cyber-interaction and discussion. Old posts be reviewed. It's nice to know that someone thinks of it as a "treasure trove", though. My response: Quote Just read this comment in another thread. Reads to me like a big "F You". I'm sad to have to say this but it looks like you could use a little polishing up of your customer relations yourself there Tom. Yes, there were lots of reasons to pull the plug on some of the crap on the board. Fundamentally, I agree with them, which makes it difficult to be upset about the action. But boy oh boy, you guys really take the cake when it comes to knowing how to do something properly. Whatever you may think about the crap that was posted and those who posted it, there's a large number of posters who enjoy Blue Note and Mosaic, come here for jazz information and have spent thousands of dollars buying the product you're selling. I'm one of them. Quite frankly, your attitude is condescending and outright disrespectful to those of us posters/customers who have supported your product in various forums throughout this board and purchased the product you're peddlin'. Perhaps the years of having posters suck up to you after you grace us with your presence to announce a new set of release dates has gone to your head. Ultimately, though, what you say is true. You own the board. You have the right to act decisively. But having the absolute power and knowing when to use it and how to use it effectively are two different things. Apparently you have not mastered that skill yet. How unfortunate for you. You got your Pandora's box anyways, and you ticked off a lot of long time boardmembers and customers in the process. Perhaps your local community college offers some courses in customer relations. Take one. I've lost a ton of respect for you personally and for Blue Note as a company - not as a result of the action you took to clean up the board - I really don't think that's a bad thing, but for the indifference and condescending attitude you have displayed to your customers in general and this customer in particular. Shame on you Edited May 21, 2004 by Ed Swinnich Quote
wesbed Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I remember ol' Ed Swinnich tearing them a new one in the last days of the BNBB. I suppose I don't need to open old wounds. But, well, Ed's comments were darned funny at the time. I could 'feel' his anger and frustration. His words spoke for me. Ed Swinnich: Welcome back to the Organissimo board. It's good to see you, here, again. Quote
JSngry Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 This link still works for now. I use it as my default window to go to other sites when I don't want to leave the web window I'm working in. Since there's nothing of value in there, it serves it's purpose well. http://www.bluenote.com/bulletinboard/ubb-...i?ubb=get_daily Don't ya' just get all misty-eyed just a-lookin' at it? Quote

Dave James Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 (edited) Ed's reference to the AAJ reminded me of their other end game smackdown. Remember after the BNBB had been down for quite some time, they redirected folks who were checking in to two other boards, neither of which was Organnissimo? Now you know they had to have been aware of this community, so why the slight? I'm guessing it was probably ecomomically driven in some way, shape or form, but I still thought it was pretty cold. BTW, Ed, good to see you posting again. Up over and out. Edited May 21, 2004 by Dave James Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted May 21, 2004 Author Report Posted May 21, 2004 Looking at the Euro-BNBB makes me realize too that they are a corporate entitity out for profit and not to entertain "fee thought" - look how constricting and status quo the Euroboard looks -"talk about our product/think about buying it!" is the impression I get... Again- as has been said, the best of the old BNBB IS here! Quote

I still believe that many of Blue Note's decisions concerning their message board were based on ignorance and not bad faith. Remember how badly the BNBB was administered? During it's last year, there were constant technical problems, which were probably due to lack of maintainance. Tom Evered and the other moderators only showed up occasionally. After the board was closed, the "Bulletin board"-link remained on the homepage for more than a year. So I can imagine that when they posted links to other jazz message boards they chose AAJ and Jazz Corner because those boards were known to them. After all, Organissimo was at the beginning mainly known and promoted among BNBB regulars, and the Blue Note guys rarely read their own message board. And why didn't they simply link to the european Blue Note board after this was created? Another sign that they really don't care about it. Edited May 21, 2004 by Claude Quote
JSngry Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I was talking to Sonny Stitts and Art Blakesly the other day, and they said that they told Tom that Organissimo was where it was at. I tried to get in touch with Hank Mobberly to get his opinion, but his service said he was out getting cigarettes and that he'd call me back. So far, no word, but keep your fingers crossed. Quote
