Dan Gould Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 (edited) As discussed Here, I've just started a disc-by-disc (working hours only) review of the cd collection. So, I thought it might be interesting to keep track of 'em all right here, and maybe include short reviews as the mood strikes. I don't know if this will interest anyone else, but who knows, maybe when I'm finished, I can print out this thread and fax it in to State Farm for insurance purposes ... So, today it was: Pepper Adams: Ten to Four at the Five Spot Plays Mingus (those bad Spaniards have put this out, you can get it from the Bastards pretty easily) Critic's Choice Live at Condon's (A private recording, I think I got it from that fellow poster who's phone pals with Michael C.) Cannonball Adderley Presenting Cannonball Things are Getting Better (with Milt Jackson, I've had this forever it seems-I think I got it shortly after hearing Something Else and the MJQ. When I realized Cannonball and Milt had done an LP together, I figured that had to be good!) Sophisticated Swing, the Complete Emarcy Small-Group Sessions )GET THIS if you don't have it!!! 8 Edited May 30, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
Patrick Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 I just picked up a copy of the Cannonball Small Groups set from Django's. Looking forward to listening to it this weekend. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 I don't know if this will interest anyone else, but who knows, maybe when I'm finished, I can print out this thread and fax it in to State Farm for insurance purposes ... That's a good point. Who ever thinks of insuring his/her music collection, usually the just the equipment we play them on? Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 21, 2004 Author Report Posted May 21, 2004 (edited) Continuing with Cannonball: Cannonball Adderley Quintet, Paris, 1960 (Pablo) At The Lighthouse In San Francisco Somethin' Else Cannonball in Japan (AMG kind of pans this one, and I can kind of see why. Don't think the band was terribly inspired here.) Cannonball Adderley Collection, Vol. 1, Them Dirty Blues (Landmark) That RTE disc, En Concert Nat Adderley: Branching Out (Man, was I thrilled when this came out and I could get my hands on a rare Three Sounds appearance away from Blue Note!) Introducing Nat Adderley Naturally! 18 Edited May 30, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 24, 2004 Author Report Posted May 24, 2004 (edited) Time to get caught up from Friday and today: Nat Adderley: Good Company We Remember Cannon The Old Country Live at the 1994 Floating Jazz Festival (That last one is a must have; great tunes, and Nat tells some great stories in between.) Toshiko Akiyoshi Quintet: At The Top of the Gate Eric Alexander: (Now you'll see why I keep defending him Full Range Two of a Kind Solid! New York Calling Mode for Mabes Live at the Keynote The First Milestone In Europe Straight Up Summit Meeting Man with a Horn Alexander the Great Nightlife in Tokyo Extra Innings Monty Alexander: Spunky Joe Alexander: Blue Jubilee (that last one I was interested to get, back in the day, when I learned that when the Three Sounds started out as the Four Sounds, Alexander was one of the saxophonists who played with the trio. OK, but more of historic interest.) 40 Edited May 30, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 25, 2004 Author Report Posted May 25, 2004 This is better than 24. Well, I heard that 24 was pretty bad this year ... B) Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 27, 2004 Author Report Posted May 27, 2004 (edited) Lorez Alexandria: Early in the Morning (this is a CDR transfer from an Argo LP, HIGHLY recommended! Ramsey Lewis and a bunch of Basie cats back up Lorez. Nice bluesy feel on most tracks.) Lorez Sings Pres: A Tribute to Lester Young Carl Allen: I don't know what the history exactly was, but Allen was apparently the leader of a neo-bop band called Manhattan Projects, and I got a bunch of 'em: Piccadilly Square Dreamboat Echoes of Our Heroes We Remember Cannonball Eric Allison: After Hours John Allred/Wycliffe Gordon: Head to Head (The group came to Boca Raton as a warmup for the recording session and put on a great show; the CD is a great reminder of that night, all the way down to the last track, which was their encore at the concert. Just a few weeks after 9/11, they played "America the Beautiful".) Gene Ammons: Just Jug Jug & Sonny (those two are Argo LP transfers) God Bless Jug & Sonny Boss Tenors Goodbye (I know, I need to get my act together on all of those Ammons OJCs!) Curtis Amy: Peace for Love (Fresh Sound, this CD should be owned by everyone who has the Amy Mosaic Select. He still had it 30 years later) Ernestine Anderson: When the Sun Goes Down (Great combination: Ernestine's soulful voice with Gene Harris, Red Holloway and Ray Brown.) Be Mine Tonite Concord All-Stars with Ernestine Anderson 57 Edited May 30, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
brownie Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Curtis Amy: Peace for Love (Fresh Sound, this CD should be owned by everyone who has the Amy Mosaic Select. He still had it 30 years later) Couldn't agree more. This is a splendid album. It was recorded in 1994 and Amy was playing better than ever. Wish there were more current releases from him. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 28, 2004 Author Report Posted May 28, 2004 (edited) Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson: Live at the Village Vanguard (Leaning House Jazz) Ray Appleton: Killer Ray Rides Again (Sharp Nine Records) Louis Armstrong: Plays W.C. Handy Satch Plays Fats (I know, I know, its a pathetically small collection of Pops. Harold Ashby: Just For You (Mapleshade) On The Sunny Side of the Street (Timeless) What am I here For? (Criss Cross) I'm Old Fashioned (Stash Records) Any of the above would make a fine addition to the "small group swing" suggestions. Georgie Auld: Plays the Winners (A CDR transfer of a pretty rare LP, with Frank Rosolino and Lou Levy) Roy Ayers: West Coast Vibes (United Artists, another CDR of a rare LP-thanks Bill!) Mads Baerentzen Trio: 785 Madison Avenue (Music Mecca) An import I ordered because Eric Alexander guests Benny Bailey: Grand Slam (Storyville) Dave Bailey: One Foot in the Gutter Two Feet in the Gutter Gettin' Into Somethin' Great hard bop dates, the Bastards often have at least some of these in stock and they shouldn't be missed. Chet Baker and Art Pepper: Picture of Heath Kenny Barron: Invitation (Criss Cross) 74 Edited May 30, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 What's the total number of CDs going to be? Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 28, 2004 Author Report Posted May 28, 2004 (edited) EDIT: I've just gone back and added a running count of the total. Actually, it just dawned on me that the disc coverage won't be 100% in the end-I'm pulling from the binders where 99% of the discs are. But when I tossed the jewel boxes, I inevitably had quite a few discs that couldn't be adopted to the binder system, like all the mini-LP packages and digi-paks. So maybe at the end I'll go through those. Don't really want to start in on them soon_just recently they were shuffled through in my car CD holder. Edited May 30, 2004 by Dan Gould Quote
