jeffcrom Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 Not sure if anyone but TTK will get why I'm spinning this kind of "guilty pleasure" album: Pete Rugolo - 10 Saxophones and 2 Basses (Mercury) Quote
jeffcrom Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 It's a Mean Old World (SFCRP - Southern Folk Culture Revival Project). 1966-72 recordings by Johnny Shines, Hazel & Alice, Macon, Georgia's Rev. Pearly Brown, etc. As a teenager, I ran across Rev. Brown on the streets of Macon. I was kind of scared of him. I wish I had talked to him. Quote

jeffcrom Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Duke Pearson - Jolly Ole Soul (BN Liberty blue and white label). An odd choice for March, I know, but I just found this record yesterday. I'm amazed that there are now two versions of "The Little Drummer Boy" that I actually like - the other is a Steve Coleman/Marvin "Smitty" Smith duet. Pat Metheny Group - Live in Concert (ECM). A promo-only 1977 record - never officially released to the public, although the internets tell me that Jazz Door pirated this one. I seldom listen to Metheny, but Larry Kart's thread (and his Metheny interview, which I read today) made me want to hear this. And okay, I don't need to hear any more Metheny for awhile. Quote
jeffcrom Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Weather Report - 8:30 (Columbia). I like this band a lot more now than I did back in the day. Quote
JSngry Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Weather Report - 8:30 (Columbia). I like this band a lot more now than I did back in the day. HA! I'd say that time is in the process of proving them right about a lot of things, at least for now. But you never can tell with time, ya' know, it's liable to do anything on your ass without any kind of a warning. But for now, yeah, they were mostly right. Not sure I'd enjoy a world where Wayne Shorter & Joe Zawinul were mostly wrong. In fact, I know I wouldn't. People have tried to make that world, and it's just not working. But watch out for time, time'll do some weird shit anway, right or wrong! Quote

One of the greatest Christmas or anytime. There's a thread somewhere here where you can get it. Only available as a download from the board. Don't delay! MG Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 MG is correct, the organissimo version is great. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Jimmy Smith - Jimmy Smith At The Organ Vol. 1 (BLP1551 mono RVG with the ear). I picked this up for $12 today. I was pretty surprised to find it in a store that usually doesn't have much Jazz. A couple of big scratches but these old original Blue Notes play pretty good even when scratched. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Coleman Hawkins - The Hawk Flies High (blue label Riverside). $12 from the same place as the LP above. I saw the cover and I knew this was an older pressing. I didn't know there was the shadow of a bare tree on the cover. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 The Curtis Counce Group Vol. 1 - Landslide. Late 70's reissue(?) with a sticker on the cover saying "An original Contemporary Classic now available again". Quote

I saw the cover and I knew this was an older pressing. I didn't know there was the shadow of a bare tree on the cover. I bought a cassette version of this on the street in Interlachen, Switzerland back in 1980. I played the crap out of it! It was years before i could find out who the players were. I think it was a commercial bootleg Quote
sidewinder Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) UK RCA pressing - bought by me back in '75. 'Up From The Skies' is easily the best arrangement on here. Fortunately I got to see Gil play it about 5-6 years later. Edited March 3, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
kh1958 Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 This morning, The Three Sounds, Moods (Blue Note stereo, W. 63rd), and Soul Jazz Volume 1 (Prestige/Bluesville mono). Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Just finished Stanley Turrentine's "A Chip Off The Old Block", a mint Liberty blue label with Van Gelder in the deadwax. Nice date. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Playing some ambient/electronica music from Tor Lundvall today as I decorate the new media room/man cave. Mizuko Jizo (33 rpm single), Evening/Leaves (45 rpm single) & Sleeping And Hiding (full LP). Quote
