Mal Waldron with Steve Lacy - One-Upmanship (Inner City). Years ago, in the early days of my obsession with Steve Lacy, I special-ordered this from an Athens, Georgia record store. It's still in excellent condition, which is somewhat surprising, because I used to play it a lot.

Yes, and those Inner City pressings were rather inconsistent, to say the least. Still have a bunch on that label, including the Dexter Gordon I referened above. IIRC, Steeplechase eventually withdrew the license from Inner City at least partly because they were not pleased with the quality of the pressings.

Yeah; I've got a Japanese Victor of Dexter's The Apartment, which sounds excellent. IC pressings aren't usually that great, but the couple I have held onto (one Dickerson and one Cecil, from SteepleChase and Enja respectively) are fine. Come to think of it, Audio Fidelity Enjas and Strata-Easts are fairly lame. But what can you do?

I've had terrible luck with Inner City pressings. They can look perfect in the store and play with crackles & pops all over the place.

The best one's I ever heard on Inner City were the Art Farmer East Winds ('To Duke With Love' and 'The Summer Knows' - still have them). Although I'm sure that the original East Winds would sound superlative.

Yeah, the East Winds I have sound wonderful (Japanese pressings).

Sabu: Palo Congo (BN/EMI Toshiba Japan)

I am curious if this is mono or stereo. I had an original lp (mono only) and it could blow the doors off the house. None of the cd reissues even come close.

My copy is stereo. Our doors are still intact. :)

Morgana King - The Winter of My Discontent (Ascot mono). Not jazz, but a good singer presenting twelve of Alec Wilder's best songs. Ms. King's rendition of the title song is my favorite recording of this great song.

And Wilder's "Who Can I Turn To" is a much better song than the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley song of the same name. YMMV.
